A new information-stealing malware named 'Mystic Stealer,' has been promoted on hacking forums and darknet markets since April 2023, quickly gaining traction in the cybercrime community. Two individual reports on Mystic Stealer, published almost simultaneously by Zscaler and Cyfirma, warn about the emergence of the new malware, its sophistication, and what appears to be a surge in sales that brings many new campaigns online.
Microsoft has confirmed that recent outages to Azure, Outlook, and OneDrive web portals resulted from Layer 7 DDoS attacks against the company's services. The outages occurred at the beginning of June, with Outlook.com's web portal targeted on June 7th, OneDrive on June 8th, and the Microsoft Azure Portal on June 9th. Microsoft did not share at the time that they were suffering DDoS attacks but hinted that they were the cause, stating for some incidents that they were "Applying load balancing processes in order to mitigate the issue."
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered previously undocumented payloads associated with a Romanian threat actor named Diicot, revealing its potential for launching distributed denial-of-service attacks. "The Diicot name is significant, as it's also the name of the Romanian organized crime and anti-terrorism policing unit," Cado Security said in a technical report.

Progress Software on Thursday disclosed a third vulnerability impacting its MOVEit Transfer application, as the Cl0p cybercrime gang deployed extortion tactics against affected companies. The company is urging all its customers to disable all HTTP and HTTPs traffic to MOVEit Transfer on ports 80 and 443 to safeguard their environments while a patch is being prepared to address the weakness.
LockBit - a ransomware-as-a-service operation that has extorted $91 million from some 1,700 attacks against U.S. organizations since 2020, striking at least 576 organizations in 2022 - gives customers a low-code interface for launching attacks. "Due to the sophistication displayed by UNC4841 and lack of full visibility into all compromised appliances, Barracuda has elected to replace and not reimage the appliance from the recovery partition out of an abundance of caution," John Palmisano, Mandiant Incident Response Manager - Google Cloud, told BleepingComputer.
In what's a new kind of software supply chain attack aimed at open source projects, it has emerged that threat actors could seize control of expired Amazon S3 buckets to serve rogue binaries without altering the modules themselves. "Malicious binaries steal the user IDs, passwords, local machine environment variables, and local host name, and then exfiltrates the stolen data to the hijacked bucket," Checkmarx researcher Guy Nachshon said.
Microsoft has linked a threat group it tracks as Cadet Blizzard since April 2023 to Russia's Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. The company previously connected this new GRU hacking group with the destructive WhisperGate data-wiping attacks in Ukraine that started on January 13, 2022, more than a month before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
