Western Digital is warning owners of My Cloud series devices that can no longer connect to cloud services starting on June 15, 2023, if the devices are not upgraded to the latest firmware, version 5.26.202. "Devices on firmware below 5.26.202 will not be able to connect to Western Digital cloud services starting June 15, 2023, and users will not be able to access data on their device through mycloud.com and the My Cloud OS 5 mobile app until they update the device to the latest firmware," explains a Western Digital support bulletin.
Customer information was stolen from the IT systems of Western Digital in that March IT security breach, forcing the storage manufacturer to shut down its online store until at least next week. Western Digital first disclosed the intrusion in early April, saying that in late March its engineers discovered someone had broken into "a number" of the biz's systems.
Digital storage giant Western Digital confirmed that an "Unauthorized third party" gained access to its systems and stole personal information belonging to the company's online store customers. "This information included customer names, billing and shipping addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers," the San Jose-based company said in a disclosure last week.
The Western Digital online store is offline as a result of the "Network security incident" it suffered in March 2023. "This information included customer names, billing and shipping addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers. In addition, the database contained, in encrypted format, hashed and salted passwords and partial credit card numbers," Western Digital informed.
Western Digital has taken its store offline and sent customers data breach notifications after confirming that hackers stole sensitive personal information in a March cyberattack. The company emailed the data breach notifications late Friday afternoon, warning that customers' data was stored in a Western Digital database stolen during the attack.
The leak comes after the threat actor warned Western Digital on April 17th that they would hurt them until they "Cannot stand anymore" if a ransom was not paid. On March 26th, Western Digital suffered a cyberattack where threat actors breached its internal network and stole company data.
