Google Updates Policies to Reject Ads for Spyware

Google this week announced that, starting next month, an update to its policy will effectively result in the rejection of ads for surveillance technology. The updated Google Ads Enabling Dishonest Behavior policy, which will "Prohibit the promotion of products or services that are marketed or targeted with the express purpose of tracking or monitoring another person or their activities without their authorization," will be enforced starting August 11, 2020, the Internet giant announced.

In a report published by Check Point research today, the malware - infamously called Joker - has found another trick to bypass Google's Play Store protections: obfuscate the malicious DEX executable inside the application as Base64 encoded strings, which are then decoded and loaded on the compromised device. "The Joker malware is tricky to detect, despite Google's investment in adding Play Store protections," said Check Point's Aviran Hazum, who identified the new modus operandi of Joker malware.

Google, it seems, is joining Apple in limiting the maximum validity of web security certificates - those digitally signed blobs of data that put the S in TLS and the padlock in your address bar - to just one year.
