A report released Wednesday by security provider IBM X-Force describes the types of threats that impact cloud security and how companies can better protect their cloud-based assets. Based on a survey of senior business and IT professionals, IBM's "2020 Cloud Security Landscape Report" found that while the cloud can empower certain business and technology capabilities, the type of ad-hoc management of cloud resources is causing increased complexity for IT and security staffs.

Databases - usually in Elasticsearch or AWS S3 buckets, and often containing sensitive data - are frequently left in public Cloud storage without access controls. The problem is so great that in January 2020, the NSA warned, "Misconfiguration of cloud resources remains the most prevalent cloud vulnerability." Such databases can be accessed, downloaded, or manipulated by anyone who finds them.

Software intelligence company Dynatrace announced it has extended its advanced observability capabilities to cloud and data center environments running on the Linux ARM platform. "In modern IT environments, containers, cloud applications, and microservices can come and go in seconds. Teams can't waste time attempting to maintain observability," said Steve Tack, SVP of Product Management, Dynatrace.

Through this alliance, Wipro will develop hybrid cloud offerings to help businesses migrate, manage and transform mission-critical workloads and applications, with security across public or private cloud and on-premises IT environments.

A Purdue University data science and machine learning innovator wants to help organizations and users get the most for their money when it comes to cloud-based databases. The system is designed to help achieve cost and performance efficiency for cloud-hosted databases, rightsizing resources to benefit both the cloud vendors who do not have to aggressively over-provision their cloud-hosted servers for fail-safe operations and to the clients because the data center savings can be passed on them.

74% of respondents expect a second wave of COVID-19 impact, with 51% planning to move more applications to the cloud to prepare for it. The impact on businesses' cloud adoption plans - with 40% currently accelerating their move to the cloud - has led to increases across a range of related decisions as companies prepare for future COVID-related shutdowns.
