There has been an alarming rise in ransomware breaches - a jump greater than the past 5 years combined, Verizon Business has revealed in its 2022 Data Breach Investigations Report. Verizon has been issuing its yearly DBIR report for the last 15 years, providing the security practitioners and executives around the world a glimpse into the global trends and patterns related to cyber incidents and data breaches.
A favorite of cybercriminals and nation states, ransomware incidents increase again. The use of ransomware to extort money increased 13% in 2021 compared to 2020, according to the Verizon 2022 Data Breach Investigations Report, now in its 15th year.
On Wednesday, Verizon's Visible - an all-digital, uber-cheap wireless carrier - confirmed what customers have been complaining about on Reddit and Twitter all week: They lost control of their accounts; had their passwords and shipping addresses changed; and some got stuck with bills for pricey new iPhones. Visible is aware of an issue in which some member accounts were accessed and/or charged without their authorization.
Visible, a US digital wireless carrier owned by Verizon, admitted that some customer accounts were hacked after dealing with technical problems in the past couple of days. The announcement was made on Visible's official sub-reddit by an employee who said the company is investigating an incident that led to a small number of accounts being breached.

The annual bible of security breaches landed on Thursday with confirmation of more bad news: ransomware attacks continue to explode as organizations struggle with securing web apps, cloud deployments and employees victimized by social engineering. The data, contained in the new Verizon 2021 Data Breach Investigations Report, shows that data-encrypting ransomware attacks appear in about 10 percent of breaches, more than double the frequency from last year.
