Microsoft has shed some light on the root cause behind yesterday's massive Azure authentication outage that affected multiple Microsoft services and blocked users from logging into their accounts. This issue prevented users from authenticating to Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Microsoft Teams, or any other service relying on Azure AD. "Between 19:00 UTC on March 15, 2021, and 09:25 UTC on March 16, 2021 customers may have encountered errors performing authentication operations for any Microsoft and third-party applications that depend on Azure Active Directory for authentication," Microsoft explained today in a preliminary root cause analysis report.
Starting at approximately 3:34 PM EST, users began reporting being unable to login to their Microsoft 365 accounts, Microsoft Teams, or access other Microsoft apps. "As a result of the issues currently facing Azure AAD, we are currently experiencing problems on the Microsoft Tech Community with login and authentication. This will result in users being unable to login and users already logged in getting unexpected errors as sessions timeout," posted a Microsoft Tech Community manager.

In email templates provided by PrismHR, PEOs are telling clients that PrismHR "Is currently experiencing an interruption of service impacting over 200 PEOs across the United States."
In an incident report published on Friday, Google said that a Google Voice outage affecting a majority of the telephone service's users earlier this month was caused by expired TLS certificates. During regular operation, voice calls made through Google Voice are controlled using the Session Initiation Protocol, with client devices immediately retrying their connection to the service once it breaks.
