Microsoft says Windows Server updates released during December's Patch Tuesday will trigger errors when trying to create new virtual machines on some Hyper-V hosts. [...]
Microsoft has released an emergency out-of-band update for Windows Server 2019 that fixes numerous critical bugs introduced during the January 2022 Patch Tuesday. Soon after Windows Server admins installed the January 2022 updates, they began reporting severe issues, including domain controllers entering into boot loops, Hyper-V no longer starting, L2TP VPN connections failing, and ReFS volumes becoming inaccessible.
Microsoft has patched the patch that broke chunks of Windows and emitted fixes for a Patch Tuesday cock-up that left servers rebooting and VPNs disconnected. On the receiving end of the company's attention were Windows desktop and Windows Server installs left a little broken following Microsoft's latest demonstration of its legendary quality control.
Microsoft's first Patch Tuesday of 2022 has, for some folk, broken Hyper-V and sent domain controllers into boot loops. As well as the broken Hyper-V, popular tech blog Born City noted problems with boot loops on domain controllers, with other versions of Windows Server affected.
The latest Windows Server updates are causing severe issues for administrators, with domain controllers having spontaneous reboots, Hyper-V not starting, and inaccessible ReFS volumes until the updates are rolled back. The most serious issue introduced by these updates is that Windows domain controllers enter a boot loop, with servers getting into an endless cycle of Windows starting and then rebooting after a few minutes.
Security researchers at Guardicore Labs are sharing details of a critical vulnerability in Hyper-V that Microsoft patched in May 2021. Tracked as CVE-2021-28476 with a CVSS score of 9.9, the security vulnerability impacts Hyper-V's virtual network switch driver and could be exploited to achieve remote code execution or cause a denial of service condition.
The bug is in Hyper-V's network switch driver and affects Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 through 2019. The two researchers found the bug together and disclosed it privately to Microsoft.
