As the Rackspace email fiasco approaches week three with the company's hosted Exchange customers' data in limbo, Rackspace execs still won't put an exact number on how many customers were affected by the ransomware-induced email outage, or when - if - they'll be able to recover their old messages and contacts. When asked for an exact customer count, "It's 1 percent of our overall company revenue," Rackspace Chief Product Officer Josh Prewitt told The Register, confirming a figure from an earlier filing with the US Securities and Exchange.
There's no end - or restored data - in sight for some Rackspace customers now on day 12 of the company's ransomware-induced hosted Exchange email outage. Cloud computing provider Rackspace warned customers on Thursday of increased risks of phishing attacks following a ransomware attack affecting its hosted Microsoft Exchange environment. Some customers are also reporting an increase in phishing emails impersonating Rackspace since the ransomware attack.
Rackspace has admitted a ransomware infection was to blame for the days-long email outage that disrupted services for customers. In its most recent update, posted at 0826 Eastern Time on Tuesday, Rackspace said it has now "Determined this suspicious activity was the result of a ransomware incident," and has hired a "Leading cyber defense firm to investigate."
Rackspace has finally confirmed the cause of the ongoing outage of its Hosted Exchange service: it's ransomware. "As you know, on Friday, December 2nd, 2022, we became aware of suspicious activity and immediately took proactive measures to isolate the Hosted Exchange environment to contain the incident. We have since determined this suspicious activity was the result of a ransomware incident," the company stated in the newest released service announcement.
Texas-based cloud computing provider Rackspace has confirmed today that a ransomware attack is behind its ongoing Hosted Exchange outage. "Although Rackspace Technology is in the early stages of assessing this incident, the incident has caused and may continue to cause an interruption in its Hosted Exchange business and may result in a loss of revenue for the Hosted Exchange business, which generates approximately $30 million of annual revenue in the Apps & Cross Platform segment," the company said.

Some of Rackspace's hosted Microsoft Exchange services have been taken down by what the company has described as a "Security incident". "On Friday, Dec 2, 2022, we became aware of an issue impacting our Hosted Exchange environment. We proactively powered down and disconnected the Hosted Exchange environment while we triaged to understand the extent and the severity of the impact. After further analysis, we have determined that this is a security incident."
