Administrators woke up to a scary surprise today after false positives in Microsoft Defender ATP showed network devices infected with Cobalt Strike. Microsoft Defender ATP is Microsoft's enterprise antivirus and threat monitoring solution that admins deploy on devices throughout an organization.
Penetration testing tool Cobalt Strike is increasingly being used by black hats in non-simulated attacks as traces show up in scenarios from ransomware infections to state-backed APT threats, says Cisco Talos. Claiming that the tool "Accounted for 66 per cent of all ransomware attacks Cisco Talos Incident Response responded to this quarter," the threat intel firm reckons that both criminal hackers and pentesting security analysts' red teams alike are making great use of Cobalt Strike, especially for its ability to deploy listeners on targeted networks.
Pentest-as-a-Service company Cobalt announced on Thursday that it has raised $29 million in a Series B funding round. Founded in 2013, Cobalt has designed a platform that connects vetted ethical hackers with organizations looking to test the security of their products.

Cobalt Iron announced the extension for its Compass enterprise SaaS backup platform that offers advanced protection for network-attached storage data. "In today's enterprises, tremendous amounts of business-critical data are held in NAS systems. The amount of stored NAS data and the urgency to protect it is constantly growing; however, NAS backup and recovery techniques haven't improved much over the years," said Greg Tevis, vice president of Global Strategy at Cobalt Iron.
