Kaspersky is stopping the operation and sales of its VPN product, Kaspersky Secure Connection, in the Russian Federation, with the free version to be suspended as early as November 15, 2022. As the Moscow-based company informed on its Russian blog earlier this week, the shutdown of the VPN service will be staged, so that impact on customers remains minimal.
A previously undocumented Android spyware campaign has been found striking Persian-speaking individuals by masquerading as a seemingly harmless VPN application. Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky is tracking the campaign under the moniker SandStrike.
Threat actors are using newly discovered spyware known as SandStrike and delivered via a malicious VPN application to target Android users. The attackers are promoting the malicious VPN app as a simple way to circumvent censorship of religious materials in certain regions.
Federal agencies are warning of a threat group called Daixin Team that is using ransomware and data extortion tactics to target US healthcare organizations. In a recent advisory, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, FBI, and Department of Health and Human Services said the group has attacked multiple entities since at least June, deploying ransomware to encrypt data on servers used for a range of services, including electronic health records, diagnostic, imaging, and intranet services.

Cisco patched three security vulnerabilities in its products this week, and said it will leave unpatched a VPN-hijacking flaw that affects four small business routers. Cisco said its Product Security Incident Response Team has not seen any public disclosures about the vulnerability nor evidence that any cybercriminal has exploited the flaw.
