The data-theft extortion group known as Luna Moth, aka Silent Ransom Group, has ramped up callback phishing campaigns in attacks on legal and financial institutions in the United States. [...]

The Luna Moth campaign has extorted hundreds of thousands of dollars from several victims in the legal and retail sectors. The attacks are notable for employing a technique called callback phishing or telephone-oriented attack delivery, wherein the victims are social engineered into making a phone call through phishing emails containing invoices and subscription-themed lures.

A new ransomware family dubbed Luna can be used to encrypt devices running several operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and ESXi systems.Discovered by Kaspersky security researchers via a dark web ransomware forum ad spotted by the company's Darknet Threat Intelligence active monitoring system, Luna ransomware appears to be specifically tailored to be used only by Russian-speaking threat actors.
