AT&T details edge computing and the security risks that you should be concerned about. AT&T has released its annual Cybersecurity Insights Report, with several key takeaways from 2021 and predictions for the year ahead. Edge computing is a key focus of the report, as AT&T goes into detail about the state of edge, as well as the company outlining the risks and security based on survey data and interviews of over 1,500 IT executives.

Worldwide spending on edge computing is expected to be $176 billion in 2022, an increase of 14.8% over 2021. Enterprise and service provider spending on hardware, software, and services for edge solutions is forecast to sustain this pace of growth through 2025 when spending will reach nearly $274 billion, according to the International Data Corporation Worldwide Edge Spending Guide.

Microsoft Edge has added a new feature to the Beta channel that will mitigate future in-the-wild exploitation of unknown zero-day vulnerabilities. "This feature is a huge step forward because it lets us mitigate unforeseen active zero days," Microsoft explains.

These investments empower organizations to provision enterprise workloads at edge locations in support of innovative edge use cases. Accordingly, a symbiotic edge and core to workload relationship is needed to enable workloads based at the core that support the edge, workloads based at the edge that support the edge, and workloads at the edge that support the core.

Organizations usually manage the security of data, applications and edge computing from disparate technologies and across different teams. Increasingly, sophisticated attacks start at the edge or application layers and move laterally to the data layer without detection.

Microsoft Edge is now displaying in-browser alerts that discourage users from downloading Google Chrome by bashing the popular browser. A few weeks later, Google began telling Microsoft Edge users to switch to Chrome to use browser extensions more securely.

A newly discovered botnet capable of staging distributed denial-of-service attacks targeted unpatched Ribbon Communications EdgeMarc appliances belonging to telecom service provider AT&T by exploiting a four-year-old flaw in the network appliances. Chinese tech giant Qihoo 360's Netlab network security division, which detected the botnet first on October 27, 2021, called it EwDoor, noting it observed 5,700 compromised IP addresses located in the U.S. during a brief three-hour window.

A recently discovered botnet is attacking unpatched AT&T enterprise network edge devices using exploits for a four-year-old critical severity Blind Command Injection security flaw. The botnet, dubbed EwDoor by researchers at Qihoo 360's Network Security Research Lab, targets AT&T customers using EdgeMarc Enterprise Session Border Controller edge devices.

Microsoft has quietly added a 'Super Duper Secure Mode' to the Microsoft Edge web browser, a new feature that brings security improvements without significant performance losses. Users can enable Super Duper Secure Mode after upgrading Edge to stable version 96.0.1054.29 or later, and they can toggle between Balanced and Strict modes for different levels of security increase.

The report also assesses the technologies, capabilities, and anticipated communications and computing solutions beyond 5G. The report provides analysis for leading 5G and edge computing supported applications and services along with forecasting from 2021 to 2025, and in some cases, through 2030. The combination of 5G and edge computing will lead a revolution in application development.
