A recent update to Microsoft's Sysinternals Autoruns program is causing the program to crash as its scans for autostarts in Windows.
For those not familiar with Autoruns, it is a free utility from Microsoft that enumerates all the programs that automatically start on a Windows machine.
After Microsoft released Autoruns v13.99 today, users began to report that the program crashes soon after it starts and enumerates the Windows startups.
In tests conducted by BleepingComputer, when we start Autoruns, it will begin scanning Windows 10 for autoruns and then crash a few seconds later, as shown below.
On Windows 7, Autoruns works properly and does not crash, so this appears to be a conflict with Windows 10.
Update 4/23/21: Microsoft has released Autoruns 13.100 to fix the crashes.
