Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)

  • Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables
This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
  • Overflow Buffers
Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
  • Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow
This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
  • Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow
In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
  • MIME Conversion
An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

descriptionThe remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-201504-01 (Mozilla Products: Multiple vulnerabilities) Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Firefox, Thunderbird, and SeaMonkey. Please review the CVE identifiers referenced below for details. Impact : A remote attacker could entice a user to view a specially crafted web page or email, possibly resulting in execution of arbitrary code or a Denial of Service condition. Furthermore, a remote attacker may be able to perform Man-in-the-Middle attacks, obtain sensitive information, spoof the address bar, conduct clickjacking attacks, bypass security restrictions and protection mechanisms, or have other unspecified impact. Workaround : There are no known workarounds at this time.

descriptionThe installed version of SeaMonkey is a version prior to 2.26.1. It is, therefore, affected by the following vulnerabilities : - There are multiple memory safety bugs in the browser engine. Several of these bugs show evidence of memory corruption, which may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2014-1533, CVE-2014-1534) - There are multiple use-after-free and out of bounds read issues. These issues have the potential to be exploited, resulting in remote code execution. (CVE-2014-1536, CVE-2014-1537, CVE-2014-1538) - A use-after-free error exists in the SMIL Animation Controller when interacting with and rendering improperly formed web content. This may result in a potentially exploitable crash. (CVE-2014-1541) - A use-after-free flaw exists in the event listener manager that can be triggered by web content. This may result in a potentially exploitable crash. (CVE-2014-1540) - A flaw exists in the Speex resample in Web Audio that results in a buffer overflow when working with audio content that exceeds the expected bounds. This flaw results in a potentially exploitable crash. (CVE-2014-1542) - There exists a buffer overflow in the Gamepad API when it is exercised with a gamepad device with non-contiguous axes. This flaw results in a potentially exploitable crash. (CVE-2014-1543)
