Attack vector
UNKNOWN Attack complexity
UNKNOWN Privileges required
UNKNOWN Confidentiality impact
UNKNOWN Integrity impact
UNKNOWN Availability impact
UNKNOWN Summary
PHP before 5.3.9 computes hash values for form parameters without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) by sending many crafted parameters.
Vulnerable Configurations
Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)
Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)
- Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
- Server Side Include (SSI) Injection An attacker can use Server Side Include (SSI) Injection to send code to a web application that then gets executed by the web server. Doing so enables the attacker to achieve similar results to Cross Site Scripting, viz., arbitrary code execution and information disclosure, albeit on a more limited scale, since the SSI directives are nowhere near as powerful as a full-fledged scripting language. Nonetheless, the attacker can conveniently gain access to sensitive files, such as password files, and execute shell commands.
- Cross Zone Scripting An attacker is able to cause a victim to load content into their web-browser that bypasses security zone controls and gain access to increased privileges to execute scripting code or other web objects such as unsigned ActiveX controls or applets. This is a privilege elevation attack targeted at zone-based web-browser security. In a zone-based model, pages belong to one of a set of zones corresponding to the level of privilege assigned to that page. Pages in an untrusted zone would have a lesser level of access to the system and/or be restricted in the types of executable content it was allowed to invoke. In a cross-zone scripting attack, a page that should be assigned to a less privileged zone is granted the privileges of a more trusted zone. This can be accomplished by exploiting bugs in the browser, exploiting incorrect configuration in the zone controls, through a cross-site scripting attack that causes the attackers' content to be treated as coming from a more trusted page, or by leveraging some piece of system functionality that is accessible from both the trusted and less trusted zone. This attack differs from "Restful Privilege Escalation" in that the latter correlates to the inadequate securing of RESTful access methods (such as HTTP DELETE) on the server, while cross-zone scripting attacks the concept of security zones as implemented by a browser.
- Cross Site Scripting through Log Files An attacker may leverage a system weakness where logs are susceptible to log injection to insert scripts into the system's logs. If these logs are later viewed by an administrator through a thin administrative interface and the log data is not properly HTML encoded before being written to the page, the attackers' scripts stored in the log will be executed in the administrative interface with potentially serious consequences. This attack pattern is really a combination of two other attack patterns: log injection and stored cross site scripting.
- Command Line Execution through SQL Injection An attacker uses standard SQL injection methods to inject data into the command line for execution. This could be done directly through misuse of directives such as MSSQL_xp_cmdshell or indirectly through injection of data into the database that would be interpreted as shell commands. Sometime later, an unscrupulous backend application (or could be part of the functionality of the same application) fetches the injected data stored in the database and uses this data as command line arguments without performing proper validation. The malicious data escapes that data plane by spawning new commands to be executed on the host.

description | This module uses a denial-of-service (DoS) condition appearing in a variety of programming languages. This vulnerability occurs when storing multiple values in a hash table and all values have the same hash value. This can cause a web server parsing the POST parameters issued with a request into a hash table to consume hours of CPU with a single HTTP request. Currently, only the hash functions for PHP and Java are implemented. This module was tested with PHP + httpd, Tomcat, Glassfish and Geronimo. It also generates a random payload to bypass some IDS signatures. |

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base scores, which give detailed severity ratings, are available for each vulnerability from the CVE links in the References section. PHP is an HTML-embedded scripting language commonly used with the Apache HTTP Server. It was found that the hashing routine used by PHP arrays was susceptible to predictable hash collisions. If an HTTP POST request to a PHP application contained many parameters whose names map to the same hash value, a large amount of CPU time would be consumed. This flaw has been mitigated by adding a new configuration directive, max_input_vars, that limits the maximum number of parameters processed per request. By default, max_input_vars is set to 1000. (CVE-2011-4885) An integer overflow flaw was found in the PHP exif extension. On 32-bit systems, a specially crafted image file could cause the PHP interpreter to crash or disclose portions of its memory when a PHP script tries to extract Exchangeable image file format (Exif) metadata from the image file. Note: this was fixed with php-5.3.10 The php_register_variable_ex function in php_variables.c in PHP 5.3.9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a request containing a large number of variables, related to improper handling of array variables. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incorrect fix for CVE-2011-4885 (CVE-2012-0830). Note: this was fixed with php-5.3.10 PHP before 5.3.10 does not properly perform a temporary change to the magic_quotes_gpc directive during the importing of environment variables, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct SQL injection attacks via a crafted request, related to main/php_variables.c, sapi/cgi/cgi_main.c, and sapi/fpm/fpm/fpm_main.c (CVE-2012-0831). Insufficient validating of upload name leading to corrupted $_FILES indices (CVE-2012-1172). The updated php packages have been upgraded to 5.3.11 which is not vulnerable to these issues. Stack-based buffer overflow in the suhosin_encrypt_single_cookie function in the transparent cookie-encryption feature in the Suhosin extension before 0.9.33 for PHP, when suhosin.cookie.encrypt and suhosin.multiheader are enabled, might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long string that is used in a Set-Cookie HTTP header (CVE-2012-0807). The php-suhosin packages has been upgraded to the 0.9.33 version which is not affected by this issue. Additionally some of the PECL extensions has been upgraded to their latest respective versions which resolves various upstream bugs. last seen 2020-06-01 modified 2020-06-02 plugin id 58890 published 2012-04-27 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2012-2019 and is owned by Tenable, Inc. or an Affiliate thereof. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/58890 title Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : php (MDVSA-2012:065) NASL family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks NASL id ORACLELINUX_ELSA-2012-0092.NASL description From Red Hat Security Advisory 2012:0092 : Updated php53 packages that fix one security issue are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having moderate security impact. (CVE-2011-4885) A use-after-free flaw was found in the PHP substr_replace() function. If a PHP script used the same variable as multiple function arguments, a remote attacker could possibly use this to crash the PHP interpreter or, possibly, execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2011-1148) An integer overflow flaw was found in the PHP exif extension. On 32-bit systems, a specially crafted image file could cause the PHP interpreter to crash or disclose portions of its memory when a PHP script tries to extract Exchangeable image file format (Exif) metadata from the image file. (CVE-2011-4566) An insufficient input validation flaw, leading to a buffer over-read, was found in the PHP exif extension. A specially crafted image file could cause the PHP interpreter to crash when a PHP script tries to extract Exchangeable image file format (Exif) metadata from the image file. (CVE-2011-0708) An integer overflow flaw was found in the PHP calendar extension. A remote attacker able to make a PHP script call SdnToJulian() with a large value could cause the PHP interpreter to crash. (CVE-2011-1466) A bug in the PHP Streams component caused the PHP interpreter to crash if an FTP wrapper connection was made through an HTTP proxy. A remote attacker could possibly trigger this issue if a PHP script accepted an untrusted URL to connect to. (CVE-2011-1469) An off-by-one flaw was found in PHP. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project identifies the following issues : - CVE-2011-1938 The UNIX socket handling allowed attackers to trigger a buffer overflow via a long path name. - CVE-2011-2483 The crypt_blowfish function did not properly handle 8-bit characters, which made it easier for attackers to determine a cleartext password by using knowledge of a password hash. - CVE-2011-4566 When used on 32 bit platforms, the exif extension could be used to trigger an integer overflow in the exif_process_IFD_TAG function when processing a JPEG file. - CVE-2011-4885 It was possible to trigger hash collisions predictably when parsing form parameters, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service by sending many crafted parameters. - CVE-2012-0057 When applying a crafted XSLT transform, an attacker could write files to arbitrary places in the filesystem. NOTE: the fix for CVE-2011-2483 required changing the behaviour of this function: it is now incompatible with some old (wrongly) generated hashes for passwords containing 8-bit characters. See the package NEWS entry for details. This change has not been applied to the Lenny version of PHP. last seen 2020-03-17 modified 2012-02-01 plugin id 57753 published 2012-02-01 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2012-2020 and is owned by Tenable, Inc. or an Affiliate thereof. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/57753 title Debian DSA-2399-2 : php5 - several vulnerabilities NASL family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks NASL id ALA_ALAS-2012-41.NASL description It was discovered that the fix for CVE-2011-4885 introduced an uninitialized memory use flaw. CVE-2007-3799 The session_start function in ext/session in PHP 4.x up to 4.4.7 and 5.x up to 5.2.3 allows remote attackers to insert arbitrary attributes into the session cookie via special characters in a cookie that is obtained from (1) PATH_INFO, (2) the session_id function, and (3) the session_start function, which are not encoded or filtered when the new session cookie is generated, a related issue to CVE-2006-0207. CVE-2010-3710 Stack consumption vulnerability in the filter_var function in PHP 5.2.x through 5.2.14 and 5.3.x through 5.3.3, when FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL mode is used, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption and application crash) via a long e-mail address string. CVE-2010-3870 The utf8_decode function in PHP before 5.3.4 does not properly handle non-shortest form UTF-8 encoding and ill-formed subsequences in UTF-8 data, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass cross-site scripting (XSS) and SQL injection protection mechanisms via a crafted string. CVE-2010-4697 Use-after-free vulnerability in the Zend engine in PHP before 5.2.15 and 5.3.x before 5.3.4 might allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) or have unspecified other impact via vectors related to use of __set, __get, __isset, and __unset methods on objects accessed by a reference. CVE-2011-1470 The Zip extension in PHP before 5.3.6 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a ziparchive stream that is not properly handled by the stream_get_contents function. CVE-2011-3182 PHP before 5.3.7 does not properly check the return values of the malloc, calloc, and realloc library functions, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) or trigger a buffer overflow by leveraging the ability to provide an arbitrary value for a function argument, related to (1) ext/curl/interface.c, (2) ext/date/lib/parse_date.c, (3) ext/date/lib/parse_iso_intervals.c, (4) ext/date/lib/parse_tz.c, (5) ext/date/lib/timelib.c, (6) ext/pdo_odbc/pdo_odbc.c, (7) ext/reflection/php_reflection.c, (8) ext/soap/php_sdl.c, (9) ext/xmlrpc/libxmlrpc/base64.c, (10) TSRM/tsrm_win32.c, and (11) the strtotime function. CVE-2011-3267 PHP before 5.3.7 does not properly implement the error_log function, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via unspecified vectors. CVE-2011-3268 Buffer overflow in the crypt function in PHP before 5.3.7 allows context-dependent attackers to have an unspecified impact via a long salt argument, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-2483. CVE-2011-4566 Integer overflow in the exif_process_IFD_TAG function in exif.c in the exif extension in PHP 5.4.0beta2 on 32-bit platforms allows remote attackers to read the contents of arbitrary memory locations or cause a denial of service via a crafted offset_val value in an EXIF header in a JPEG file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2011-0708. CVE-2012-0830 The php_register_variable_ex function in php_variables.c in PHP 5.3.9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a request containing a large number of variables, related to improper handling of array variables.
