Security News > 2022 > June > Why Netflix isn't the Only One Bummed About Password Sharing
As its revenues continue to decline, Netflix has announced that it is cracking down on password sharing.
An April 2022 study found that of 2209 American households surveyed, 17% admitted to sharing a Netflix password, and 11% of those respondents claimed to be sharing a password with people outside of their household.
Even if you put aside the obvious problems that password sharing creates for Netflix, Netflix password sharing may only be a symptom of a more serious problem.
The Netflix password sharing trend has conditioned people to accept the idea that it is OK to share passwords with one another if there is a good reason for doing so.
If the employee shares the password with a coworker, and that coworker eventually resigns, but the employee's password never changes, then the former employee will continue to be able to access the organization's network through the shared password.
Specops offers a free, read-only tool called Specops Password Auditor that can generate password reports, letting you know if multiple employees are using the same password.
