Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)

Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)

  • XML Nested Payloads
Applications often need to transform data in and out of the XML format by using an XML parser. It may be possible for an attacker to inject data that may have an adverse effect on the XML parser when it is being processed. By nesting XML data and causing this data to be continuously self-referential, an attacker can cause the XML parser to consume more resources while processing, causing excessive memory consumption and CPU utilization. An attacker's goal is to leverage parser failure to his or her advantage. In most cases this type of an attack will result in a denial of service due to an application becoming unstable, freezing, or crash. However it may be possible to cause a crash resulting in arbitrary code execution, leading to a jump from the data plane to the control plane [R.230.1].
  • XML Oversized Payloads
Applications often need to transform data in and out of the XML format by using an XML parser. It may be possible for an attacker to inject data that may have an adverse effect on the XML parser when it is being processed. By supplying oversized payloads in input vectors that will be processed by the XML parser, an attacker can cause the XML parser to consume more resources while processing, causing excessive memory consumption and CPU utilization, and potentially cause execution of arbitrary code. An attacker's goal is to leverage parser failure to his or her advantage. In many cases this type of an attack will result in a denial of service due to an application becoming unstable, freezing, or crash. However it is possible to cause a crash resulting in arbitrary code execution, leading to a jump from the data plane to the control plane [R.231.1].
  • Violating Implicit Assumptions Regarding XML Content (aka XML Denial of Service (XDoS))
XML Denial of Service (XDoS) can be applied to any technology that utilizes XML data. This is, of course, most distributed systems technology including Java, .Net, databases, and so on. XDoS is most closely associated with web services, SOAP, and Rest, because remote service requesters can post malicious XML payloads to the service provider designed to exhaust the service provider's memory, CPU, and/or disk space. The main weakness in XDoS is that the service provider generally must inspect, parse, and validate the XML messages to determine routing, workflow, security considerations, and so on. It is exactly these inspection, parsing, and validation routines that XDoS targets. There are three primary attack vectors that XDoS can navigate Target CPU through recursion: attacker creates a recursive payload and sends to service provider Target memory through jumbo payloads: service provider uses DOM to parse XML. DOM creates in memory representation of XML document, but when document is very large (for example, north of 1 Gb) service provider host may exhaust memory trying to build memory objects. XML Ping of death: attack service provider with numerous small files that clog the system. All of the above attacks exploit the loosely coupled nature of web services, where the service provider has little to no control over the service requester and any messages the service requester sends.
  • XML Parser Attack
Applications often need to transform data in and out of the XML format by using an XML parser. It may be possible for an attacker to inject data that may have an adverse effect on the XML parser when it is being processed. These adverse effects may include the parser crashing, consuming too much of a resource, executing too slowly, executing code supplied by an attacker, allowing usage of unintended system functionality, etc. An attacker's goal is to leverage parser failure to his or her advantage. In some cases it may be possible to jump from the data plane to the control plane via bad data being passed to an XML parser. [R.99.1]

"According to the versions of the binutils package installed, the
EulerOS Virtualization installation on the remote host is affected by
    the following vulnerabilities :

      - GNU Binutils 2017-04-03 allows remote attackers to
cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and
        application crash), related to the
        process_mips_specific function in readelf.c, via a
crafted ELF file that triggers a large
        memory-allocation attempt.(CVE-2017-9040)

      - The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd),
as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, has an
aout_link_add_symbols function in bfd/aoutx.h that is
        vulnerable to a heap-based buffer over-read
(off-by-one) because of an incomplete check for invalid
string offsets while loading symbols, leading to a GNU
        linker (ld) program crash.(CVE-2017-7300)

      - The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd),
as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, has an
aout_link_add_symbols function in bfd/aoutx.h that has
an off-by-one vulnerability because it does not
carefully check the string offset. The vulnerability
could lead to a GNU linker (ld) program
        crash.(CVE-2017-7301)

      - The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd),
as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, has a
swap_std_reloc_out function in bfd/aoutx.h that is
vulnerable to an invalid read (of size 4) because of
missing checks for relocs that could not be recognised.
This vulnerability causes Binutils utilities like strip
        to crash.(CVE-2017-7302)

      - The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd),
as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to
an invalid read (of size 4) because of missing a check
(in the find_link function) for null headers before
attempting to match them. This vulnerability causes
Binutils utilities like strip to crash.(CVE-2017-7303)

      - The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd),
as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to
an invalid read (of size 8) because of missing a check
(in the copy_special_section_fields function) for an
invalid sh_link field before attempting to follow it.
This vulnerability causes Binutils utilities like strip
        to crash.(CVE-2017-7304)

      - The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd),
as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to a
global buffer over-read error because of an assumption
made by code that runs for objcopy and strip, that
SHT_REL/SHR_RELA sections are always named starting
with a .rel/.rela prefix. This vulnerability causes
programs that conduct an analysis of binary programs
using the libbfd library, such as objcopy and strip, to
        crash.(CVE-2017-8393)

      - The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd),
as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to
an invalid write of size 8 because of missing a
malloc() return-value check to see if memory had
        actually been allocated in the
        _bfd_generic_get_section_contents function. This
vulnerability causes programs that conduct an analysis
of binary programs using the libbfd library, such as
        objcopy, to crash.(CVE-2017-8395)

      - The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd),
as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to
an invalid read of size 1 because the existing reloc
offset range tests didn't catch small negative offsets
less than the size of the reloc field. This
vulnerability causes programs that conduct an analysis
of binary programs using the libbfd library, such as
        objdump, to crash.(CVE-2017-8396)

      - The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd),
as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to
an invalid read of size 1 and an invalid write of size
1 during processing of a corrupt binary containing
reloc(s) with negative addresses. This vulnerability
causes programs that conduct an analysis of binary
programs using the libbfd library, such as objdump, to
        crash.(CVE-2017-8397)

      - dwarf.c in GNU Binutils 2.28 is vulnerable to an
invalid read of size 1 during dumping of debug
information from a corrupt binary. This vulnerability
causes programs that conduct an analysis of binary
programs, such as objdump and readelf, to
        crash.(CVE-2017-8398)

      - find_abstract_instance_name in dwarf2.c in the Binary
File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as
distributed in GNU Binutils 2.29, allows remote
attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite
recursion and application crash) via a crafted ELF
        file.(CVE-2017-15024)

      - The setup_group function in elf.c in the Binary File
Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed
in GNU Binutils 2.29, allows remote attackers to cause
a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and
application crash) via a group section that is too
        small.(CVE-2017-13710)

      - The elf_read_notesfunction in bfd/elf.c in GNU Binutils
2.29 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of

attackers to cause a denial of service (excessive
memory allocation) or possibly have unspecified other
impact via a crafted ELF file that triggers a 'buffer
overflow on fuzzed archive header,' related to an
uninitialized variable, an improper conditional jump,
        and the get_archive_member_name,
        process_archive_index_and_symbols, and setup_archive
        functions.(CVE-2017-15996)

      - readelf.c in GNU Binutils 2017-04-12 has a 'cannot be
represented in type long' issue, which might allow
remote attackers to cause a denial of service
(application crash) or possibly have unspecified other
impact via a crafted ELF file.(CVE-2017-9042)

If a user or automated system were tricked into processing a specially crafted binary, a remote attacker could use this issue to cause libiberty to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code. Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

descriptionIt was discovered that GNU binutils contained a large number of security issues. If a user or automated system were tricked into processing a specially crafted file, a remote attacker could cause GNU binutils to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code. Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.
