Summary

The simple_set_acl function in fs/posix_acl.c in the Linux kernel before 4.9.6 preserves the setgid bit during a setxattr call involving a tmpfs filesystem, which allows local users to gain group privileges by leveraging the existence of a setgid program with restrictions on execute permissions. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2016-7097.

The following security bugs were fixed :

      - CVE-2016-7117: Use-after-free vulnerability in the
__sys_recvmmsg function in net/socket.c in the Linux
kernel allowed remote attackers to execute arbitrary
code via vectors involving a recvmmsg system call that
is mishandled during error processing (bnc#1003077
        1003253).

      - CVE-2017-5576, CVE-2017-5577: A buffer overflow in the
VC4_SUBMIT_CL IOCTL in the VideoCore DRM driver for
        Raspberry Pi was fixed. (bsc#1021294)

      - CVE-2017-5551: tmpfs: Fixed a bug that could have
allowed users to set setgid bits on files they don't
        down. (bsc#1021258).

      - CVE-2017-2583: A Linux kernel built with the
Kernel-based Virtual Machine (CONFIG_KVM) support was
vulnerable to an incorrect segment selector(SS) value
error. A user/process inside guest could have used this
flaw to crash the guest resulting in DoS or potentially
escalate their privileges inside guest. (bsc#1020602).

      - CVE-2017-2584: arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c in the Linux
kernel allowed local users to obtain sensitive
information from kernel memory or cause a denial of
service (use-after-free) via a crafted application that
leverages instruction emulation for fxrstor, fxsave,
        sgdt, and sidt (bnc#1019851).

      - CVE-2015-8709: ** DISPUTED ** kernel/ptrace.c in the
Linux kernel mishandled uid and gid mappings, which
allowed local users to gain privileges by establishing a
user namespace, waiting for a root process to enter that
namespace with an unsafe uid or gid, and then using the
ptrace system call. NOTE: the vendor states 'there is no
        kernel bug here (bnc#959709 bsc#960561).

      - CVE-2016-9806: Race condition in the netlink_dump
function in net/netlink/af_netlink.c in the Linux kernel
allowed local users to cause a denial of service (double
free) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a
crafted application that made sendmsg system calls,
leading to a free operation associated with a new dump
that started earlier than anticipated (bnc#1013540
        1017589).

      - CVE-2016-8645: The TCP stack in the Linux kernel
mishandled skb truncation, which allowed local users to
cause a denial of service (system crash) via a crafted
application that made sendto system calls, related to
        net/ipv4/tcp_ipv4.c and net/ipv6/tcp_ipv6.c
        (bnc#1009969).

      - CVE-2016-9793: The sock_setsockopt function in
net/core/sock.c in the Linux kernel mishandled negative
values of sk_sndbuf and sk_rcvbuf, which allowed local
users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption
and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other
impact by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability for a
crafted setsockopt system call with the (1)
        SO_SNDBUFFORCE or (2) SO_RCVBUFFORCE option (bnc#1013531
        bsc#1013542).

      - CVE-2016-9919: The icmp6_send function in
net/ipv6/icmp.c in the Linux kernel omits a certain
check of the dst data structure, which allowed remote
attackers to cause a denial of service (panic) via a
        fragmented IPv6 packet (bnc#1014701).

descriptionFrom Red Hat Security Advisory 2017:1842 : An update for kernel is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having a security impact of Important. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available for each vulnerability from the CVE link(s) in the References section. The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux operating system. Security Fix(es) : * An use-after-free flaw was found in the Linux kernel which enables a race condition in the L2TPv3 IP Encapsulation feature. A local user could use this flaw to escalate their privileges or crash the system. (CVE-2016-10200, Important) * A flaw was found that can be triggered in keyring_search_iterator in keyring.c if type->match is NULL. A local user could use this flaw to crash the system or, potentially, escalate their privileges. An update for kernel is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having a security
impact of Important. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base
score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available for each
vulnerability from the CVE link(s) in the References section.

The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux
    operating system.

    Security Fix(es) :

    * An use-after-free flaw was found in the Linux kernel which enables a
race condition in the L2TPv3 IP Encapsulation feature. A local user
could use this flaw to escalate their privileges or crash the system.
    (CVE-2016-10200, Important)

    * A flaw was found that can be triggered in keyring_search_iterator in
keyring.c if type->match is NULL. A local user could use this flaw to
crash the system or, potentially, escalate their privileges.
    (CVE-2017-2647, Important)

    * It was found that the NFSv4 server in the Linux kernel did not
properly validate layout type when processing NFSv4 pNFS LAYOUTGET and

    NASL idSUSE_SU-2017-0464-1.NASL
descriptionThe SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 SP1 kernel was updated to 3.12.69 to receive various security and bugfixes. The following security bugs were fixed : - CVE-2015-8962: Double free vulnerability in the sg_common_write function in drivers/scsi/sg.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system crash) by detaching a device during an SG_IO ioctl call (bnc#1010501). - CVE-2015-8963: Race condition in kernel/events/core.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) by leveraging incorrect handling of an swevent data structure during a CPU unplug operation (bnc#1010502). - CVE-2015-8964: The tty_set_termios_ldisc function in drivers/tty/tty_ldisc.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory by reading a tty data structure (bnc#1010507). - CVE-2016-10088: The sg implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly restrict write operations in situations where the KERNEL_DS option is set, which allowed local users to read or write to arbitrary kernel memory locations or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) by leveraging access to a /dev/sg device, related to block/bsg.c and drivers/scsi/sg.c. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2016-9576 (bnc#1017710). - CVE-2016-7910: Use-after-free vulnerability in the disk_seqf_stop function in block/genhd.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to gain privileges by leveraging the execution of a certain stop operation even if the corresponding start operation had failed (bnc#1010716). - CVE-2016-7911: Race condition in the get_task_ioprio function in block/ioprio.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) via a crafted ioprio_get system call (bnc#1010711). - CVE-2016-7913: The xc2028_set_config function in drivers/media/tuners/tuner-xc2028.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) via vectors involving omission of the firmware name from a certain data structure (bnc#1010478). - CVE-2016-7914: The assoc_array_insert_into_terminal_node function in lib/assoc_array.c in the Linux kernel did not check whether a slot is a leaf, which allowed local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory or cause a denial of service (invalid pointer dereference and out-of-bounds read) via an application that uses associative-array data structures, as demonstrated by the keyutils test suite (bnc#1010475). - CVE-2016-8399: An elevation of privilege vulnerability in the kernel networking subsystem could enable a local malicious application to execute arbitrary code within the context of the kernel. This issue is rated as Moderate because it first requires compromising a privileged process and current compiler optimizations restrict access to the vulnerable code. Product: Android. Versions: Kernel-3.10, Kernel-3.18. Android ID: A-31349935 (bnc#1014746). - CVE-2016-8633: drivers/firewire/net.c in the Linux kernel, in certain unusual hardware configurations, allowed remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted fragmented packets (bnc#1008833). - CVE-2016-8645: The TCP stack in the Linux kernel mishandled skb truncation, which allowed local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) via a crafted application that made sendto system calls, related to net/ipv4/tcp_ipv4.c and net/ipv6/tcp_ipv6.c (bnc#1009969). - CVE-2016-9083: drivers/vfio/pci/vfio_pci.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to bypass integer overflow checks, and cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or have unspecified other impact, by leveraging access to a vfio PCI device file for a VFIO_DEVICE_SET_IRQS ioctl call, aka a

"The SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 SP1 kernel was updated to 3.12.69 to
receive various security and bugfixes. The following security bugs
    were fixed :

      - CVE-2015-8962: Double free vulnerability in the
sg_common_write function in drivers/scsi/sg.c in the
Linux kernel allowed local users to gain privileges or
cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system
crash) by detaching a device during an SG_IO ioctl call
        (bnc#1010501).

      - CVE-2015-8963: Race condition in kernel/events/core.c in
the Linux kernel allowed local users to gain privileges
or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) by
leveraging incorrect handling of an swevent data
structure during a CPU unplug operation (bnc#1010502).

      - CVE-2015-8964: The tty_set_termios_ldisc function in
drivers/tty/tty_ldisc.c in the Linux kernel allowed
local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel
memory by reading a tty data structure (bnc#1010507).

      - CVE-2016-10088: The sg implementation in the Linux
kernel did not properly restrict write operations in
situations where the KERNEL_DS option is set, which
allowed local users to read or write to arbitrary kernel
memory locations or cause a denial of service
        (use-after-free) by leveraging access to a /dev/sg
device, related to block/bsg.c and drivers/scsi/sg.c.
NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete
        fix for CVE-2016-9576 (bnc#1017710).

      - CVE-2016-7910: Use-after-free vulnerability in the
disk_seqf_stop function in block/genhd.c in the Linux
kernel allowed local users to gain privileges by
leveraging the execution of a certain stop operation
even if the corresponding start operation had failed
        (bnc#1010716).

      - CVE-2016-7911: Race condition in the get_task_ioprio
function in block/ioprio.c in the Linux kernel allowed
local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of
        service (use-after-free) via a crafted ioprio_get system
        call (bnc#1010711).

      - CVE-2016-7913: The xc2028_set_config function in
        drivers/media/tuners/tuner-xc2028.c in the Linux kernel
allowed local users to gain privileges or cause a denial
of service (use-after-free) via vectors involving
omission of the firmware name from a certain data
        structure (bnc#1010478).

      - CVE-2016-7914: The assoc_array_insert_into_terminal_node
function in lib/assoc_array.c in the Linux kernel did
not check whether a slot is a leaf, which allowed local
users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory
or cause a denial of service (invalid pointer
dereference and out-of-bounds read) via an application
that uses associative-array data structures, as
demonstrated by the keyutils test suite (bnc#1010475).

      - CVE-2016-8399: An elevation of privilege vulnerability
in the kernel networking subsystem could enable a local
malicious application to execute arbitrary code within
the context of the kernel. This issue is rated as
Moderate because it first requires compromising a
privileged process and current compiler optimizations
restrict access to the vulnerable code. Product:
Android. Versions: Kernel-3.10, Kernel-3.18. Android ID:
        A-31349935 (bnc#1014746).

      - CVE-2016-8633: drivers/firewire/net.c in the Linux
kernel, in certain unusual hardware configurations,
allowed remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via
        crafted fragmented packets (bnc#1008833).

      - CVE-2016-9083: drivers/vfio/pci/vfio_pci.c in the Linux
kernel allowed local users to bypass integer overflow
checks, and cause a denial of service (memory
corruption) or have unspecified other impact, by
leveraging access to a vfio PCI device file for a
VFIO_DEVICE_SET_IRQS ioctl call, aka a 'state machine
        confusion bug' (bnc#1007197).

      - CVE-2016-9084: drivers/vfio/pci/vfio_pci_intrs.c in the
Linux kernel misuses the kzalloc function, which allowed
local users to cause a denial of service (integer
overflow) or have unspecified other impact by leveraging
access to a vfio PCI device file (bnc#1007197).

      - CVE-2016-9756: arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c in the Linux
kernel did not properly initialize Code Segment (CS) in
certain error cases, which allowed local users to obtain
sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a
        crafted application (bnc#1013038).

      - CVE-2016-9793: The sock_setsockopt function in
net/core/sock.c in the Linux kernel mishandled negative
values of sk_sndbuf and sk_rcvbuf, which allowed local
users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption
and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other
impact by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability for a
crafted setsockopt system call with the (1)
        SO_SNDBUFFORCE or (2) SO_RCVBUFFORCE option (bnc#1013531
        1013542).

      - CVE-2016-9806: Race condition in the netlink_dump
function in net/netlink/af_netlink.c in the Linux kernel
allowed local users to cause a denial of service (double
free) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a
crafted application that made sendmsg system calls,
leading to a free operation associated with a new dump
that started earlier than anticipated (bnc#1013540
        1017589).

      - CVE-2017-2584: arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c in the Linux
kernel allowed local users to obtain sensitive
information from kernel memory or cause a denial of
service (use-after-free) via a crafted application that
leverages instruction emulation for fxrstor, fxsave,
        sgdt, and sidt (bsc#1019851).

      - CVE-2017-2583: Fixed broken emulation of 'MOV SS, null
        selector' (bsc#1020602).

      - CVE-2017-5551: Clear SGID bit when setting file
        permissions on tmpfs (bsc#1021258).

The update package also includes non-security fixes. See advisory for

descriptionAn update for kernel is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. (CVE-2017-2647, Important) * It was found that the NFSv4 server in the Linux kernel did not properly validate layout type when processing NFSv4 pNFS LAYOUTGET and GETDEVICEINFO operands. A remote attacker could use this flaw to soft-lockup the system and thus cause denial of service. (CVE-2017-8797, Important) This update also fixes multiple Moderate and Low impact security issues : * CVE-2015-8839, CVE-2015-8970, CVE-2016-9576, CVE-2016-7042, CVE-2016-7097, CVE-2016-8645, CVE-2016-9576, CVE-2016-9588, CVE-2016-9806, CVE-2016-10088, CVE-2016-10147, CVE-2017-2596, CVE-2017-2671, CVE-2017-5970, CVE-2017-6001, CVE-2017-6951, CVE-2017-7187, CVE-2017-7616, CVE-2017-7889, CVE-2017-8890, CVE-2017-9074, CVE-2017-8890, CVE-2017-9075, CVE-2017-8890, CVE-2017-9076, CVE-2017-8890, CVE-2017-9077, CVE-2017-9242, CVE-2014-7970, CVE-2014-7975, CVE-2016-6213, CVE-2016-9604, CVE-2016-9685 Documentation for these issues is available from the Release Notes document linked from the References section. "An update for kernel is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

    Security Fix(es) :

    * It was found that the NFSv4 server in the Linux kernel did not
properly validate layout type when processing NFSv4 pNFS LAYOUTGET and
GETDEVICEINFO operands. A remote attacker could use this flaw to
soft-lockup the system and thus cause denial of service.
    (CVE-2017-8797, Important)

This update also fixes multiple Moderate and Low impact security
    issues :

    * CVE-2015-8839, CVE-2015-8970, CVE-2016-9576, CVE-2016-7042,
    CVE-2016-7097, CVE-2016-8645, CVE-2016-9576, CVE-2016-9588,

        value:
"A use-after-free flaw was found in the way the Linux kernel's Datagram
Congestion Control Protocol (DCCP) implementation freed SKB (socket
buffer) resources for a DCCP_PKT_REQUEST packet when the
IPV6_RECVPKTINFO option is set on the socket. A local, unprivileged
user could use this flaw to alter the kernel memory, allowing them to
escalate their privileges on the system. (CVE-2017-6074)

A vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel. When file permissions
are modified via chmod and the user is not in the owning group or
capable of CAP_FSETID, the setgid bit is cleared in inode_change_ok().
Setting a POSIX ACL via setxattr sets the file permissions as well as
the new ACL, but doesn't clear the setgid bit in a similar way; this
allows to bypass the check in chmod. (CVE-2016-7097)

A vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel in 'tmpfs' file system.
When file permissions are modified via 'chmod' and the user is not in
the owning group or capable of CAP_FSETID, the setgid bit is cleared
in inode_change_ok(). Setting a POSIX ACL via 'setxattr' sets the file
permissions as well as the new ACL, but doesn't clear the setgid bit
in a similar way; this allows to bypass the check in 'chmod'.
    (CVE-2017-5551)

An issue was found in the Linux kernel ipv6 implementation of GRE
tunnels which allows a remote attacker to trigger an out-of-bounds
    access. (CVE-2017-5897)

It was discovered that an application may trigger a BUG_ON in
sctp_wait_for_sndbuf if the socket tx buffer is full, a thread is
waiting on it to queue more data, and meanwhile another thread peels
off the association being used by the first thread. (CVE-2017-5986)

A vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel where having malicious
IP options present would cause the ipv4_pktinfo_prepare() function to
drop/free the dst. This could result in a system crash or possible
    privilege escalation. (CVE-2017-5970)

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's handling of packets with the
URG flag. Applications using the splice() and tcp_splice_read()
functionality can allow a remote attacker to force the kernel to enter
a condition in which it can loop indefinitely. (CVE-2017-6214)

(Updated on 2017-03-21: CVE-2017-5970 was fixed in this release but
was previously not part of this errata.)

descriptionAn update for kernel is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having a security impact of Moderate. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available for each vulnerability from the CVE link(s) in the References section. The kernel packages contain the Linux kernel, the core of any Linux operating system. Security Fix(es) : * It was discovered that a remote attacker could leverage the generation of IPv6 atomic fragments to trigger the use of fragmentation in an arbitrary IPv6 flow (in scenarios in which actual fragmentation of packets is not needed) and could subsequently perform any type of a fragmentation-based attack against legacy IPv6 nodes that do not implement RFC6946. (CVE-2016-10142, Moderate) * A flaw was discovered in the way the Linux kernel dealt with paging structures. When the kernel invalidated a paging structure that was not in use locally, it could, in principle, race against another CPU that is switching to a process that uses the paging structure in question. A local user could use a thread running with a stale cached virtual->physical translation to potentially escalate their privileges if the translation in question were writable and the physical page got reused for something critical (for example, a page table). (CVE-2016-2069, Moderate) * A race condition flaw was found in the ioctl_send_fib() function in the Linux kernel

    NASL idSUSE_SU-2017-0333-1.NASL
descriptionThe SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP2 LTSS kernel was updated to receive various security and bugfixes. This is the last planned LTSS kernel update for the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2 LTSS. The following security bugs were fixed : - CVE-2016-10088: The sg implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly restrict write operations in situations where the KERNEL_DS option is set, which allowed local users to read or write to arbitrary kernel memory locations or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) by leveraging access to a /dev/sg device, related to block/bsg.c and drivers/scsi/sg.c. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2016-9576 (bnc#1017710). - CVE-2004-0230: TCP, when using a large Window Size, made it easier for remote attackers to guess sequence numbers and cause a denial of service (connection loss) to persistent TCP connections by repeatedly injecting a TCP RST packet, especially in protocols that use long-lived connections, such as BGP (bnc#969340). - CVE-2016-8632: The tipc_msg_build function in net/tipc/msg.c in the Linux kernel did not validate the relationship between the minimum fragment length and the maximum packet size, which allowed local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability (bnc#1008831). - CVE-2016-8399: An out of bounds read in the ping protocol handler could have lead to information disclosure (bsc#1014746). - CVE-2016-9793: The sock_setsockopt function in net/core/sock.c in the Linux kernel mishandled negative values of sk_sndbuf and sk_rcvbuf, which allowed local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability for a crafted setsockopt system call with the (1) SO_SNDBUFFORCE or (2) SO_RCVBUFFORCE option (bnc#1013531). - CVE-2012-6704: The sock_setsockopt function in net/core/sock.c in the Linux kernel mishandled negative values of sk_sndbuf and sk_rcvbuf, which allowed local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability for a crafted setsockopt system call with the (1) SO_SNDBUF or (2) SO_RCVBUF option (bnc#1013542). - CVE-2016-9756: arch/x86/kvm/emulate.c in the Linux kernel did not properly initialize Code Segment (CS) in certain error cases, which allowed local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory via a crafted application (bnc#1013038). - CVE-2016-3841: The IPv6 stack in the Linux kernel mishandled options data, which allowed local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (use-after-free and system crash) via a crafted sendmsg system call (bnc#992566). - CVE-2016-9685: Multiple memory leaks in error paths in fs/xfs/xfs_attr_list.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via crafted XFS filesystem operations (bnc#1012832). - CVE-2015-1350: The VFS subsystem in the Linux kernel 3.x provides an incomplete set of requirements for setattr operations that underspecified removing extended privilege attributes, which allowed local users to cause a denial of service (capability stripping) via a failed invocation of a system call, as demonstrated by using chown to remove a capability from the ping or Wireshark dumpcap program (bnc#914939). - descriptionFrom Red Hat Security Advisory 2017:0817 : An update for kernel is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. (CVE-2016-2069, Moderate) * A race condition flaw was found in the ioctl_send_fib() function in the Linux kernel

descriptionSeveral vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel that may lead to a privilege escalation, denial of service or have other impacts. - CVE-2016-6786 / CVE-2016-6787 It was discovered that the performance events subsystem does not properly manage locks during certain migrations, allowing a local attacker to escalate privileges. This can be mitigated by disabling unprivileged use of performance events:sysctl kernel.perf_event_paranoid=3 - CVE-2016-8405 Peter Pi of Trend Micro discovered that the frame buffer video subsystem does not properly check bounds while copying color maps to userspace, causing a heap buffer out-of-bounds read, leading to information disclosure. - CVE-2016-9191 CAI Qian discovered that reference counting is not properly handled within proc_sys_readdir in the sysctl implementation, allowing a local denial of service (system hang) or possibly privilege escalation. - CVE-2017-2583 Xiaohan Zhang reported that KVM for amd64 does not correctly emulate loading of a null stack selector. This can be used by a user in a guest VM for denial of service (on an Intel CPU) or to escalate privileges within the VM (on an AMD CPU). - CVE-2017-2584 Dmitry Vyukov reported that KVM for x86 does not correctly emulate memory access by the SGDT and SIDT instructions, which can result in a use-after-free and information leak. - CVE-2017-2596 Dmitry Vyukov reported that KVM leaks page references when emulating a VMON for a nested hypervisor. This can be used by a privileged user in a guest VM for denial of service or possibly to gain privileges in the host. - CVE-2017-2618 It was discovered that an off-by-one in the handling of SELinux attributes in /proc/pid/attr could result in local denial of service. - CVE-2017-5549 It was discovered that the KLSI KL5KUSB105 serial USB device driver could log the contents of uninitialised kernel memory, resulting in an information leak. - CVE-2017-5551 Jan Kara found that changing the POSIX ACL of a file on tmpfs never cleared its set-group-ID flag, which should be done if the user changing it is not a member of the group-owner. In some cases, this would allow the user-owner of an executable to gain the privileges of the group-owner. - CVE-2017-5897 Andrey Konovalov discovered an out-of-bounds read flaw in the ip6gre_err function in the IPv6 networking code. - CVE-2017-5970 Andrey Konovalov discovered a denial-of-service flaw in the IPv4 networking code. This can be triggered by a local or remote attacker if a local UDP or raw socket has the IP_RETOPTS option enabled. - CVE-2017-6001 Di Shen discovered a race condition between concurrent calls to the performance events subsystem, allowing a local attacker to escalate privileges. This flaw exists because of an incomplete fix of CVE-2016-6786. This can be mitigated by disabling unprivileged use of performance events: sysctl kernel.perf_event_paranoid=3 - CVE-2017-6074 Andrey Konovalov discovered a use-after-free vulnerability in the DCCP networking code, which could result in denial of service or local privilege escalation. On systems that do not already have the dccp module loaded, this can be mitigated by disabling it:echo >> /etc/modprobe.d/disable-dccp.conf install dccp false

descriptionUSN-3234-1 fixed vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. This update provides the corresponding updates for the Linux Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernel from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Ralf Spenneberg discovered that the ext4 implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly validate meta block groups. An attacker with physical access could use this to specially craft an ext4 image that causes a denial of service (system crash). (CVE-2016-10208) It was discovered that the Linux kernel did not clear the setgid bit during a setxattr call on a tmpfs filesystem. A local attacker could use this to gain elevated group privileges. (CVE-2017-5551). Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

    NASL idSUSE_SU-2017-0437-1.NASL
descriptionThe SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP4 kernel was updated to 3.0.101-94 to receive various security and bugfixes. The following security bugs were fixed : - CVE-2017-5551: tmpfs: clear S_ISGID when setting posix ACLs (bsc#1021258). - CVE-2016-10088: The sg implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly restrict write operations in situations where the KERNEL_DS option is set, which allowed local users to read or write to arbitrary kernel memory locations or cause a denial of service (use-after-free) by leveraging access to a /dev/sg device NOTE: this vulnerability existed because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2016-9576 (bnc#1017710). - CVE-2016-5696: TCP, when using a large Window Size, made it easier for remote attackers to guess sequence numbers and cause a denial of service (connection loss) to persistent TCP connections by repeatedly injecting a TCP RST packet, especially in protocols that use long-lived connections, such as BGP (bnc#989152). - CVE-2015-1350: The VFS subsystem in the Linux kernel 3.x provided an incomplete set of requirements for setattr operations that underspecified removing extended privilege attributes, which allowed local users to cause a denial of service (capability stripping) via a failed invocation of a system call, as demonstrated by using chown to remove a capability from the ping or Wireshark dumpcap program (bnc#914939). (bnc#1014746). - CVE-2016-9685: Multiple memory leaks in error paths in fs/xfs/xfs_attr_list.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via crafted XFS filesystem operations (bnc#1012832). - CVE-2015-8962: Double free vulnerability in the sg_common_write function in drivers/scsi/sg.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system crash) by detaching a device during an SG_IO ioctl call (bnc#1010501). - CVE-2016-9555: The sctp_sf_ootb function in net/sctp/sm_statefuns.c in the Linux kernel lacked chunk-length checking for the first chunk, which allowed remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds slab access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted SCTP data (bnc#1011685). - CVE-2013-6368: The KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel allowed local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (system crash) via a VAPIC synchronization operation involving a page-end address (bnc#853052). - CVE-2015-8964: The tty_set_termios_ldisc function in drivers/tty/tty_ldisc.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory by reading a tty data structure (bnc#1010507). - CVE-2016-7916: Race condition in the environ_read function in fs/proc/base.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory by reading a /proc/*/environ file during a process-setup time interval in which environment-variable copying is incomplete (bnc#1010467). - CVE-2016-8646: The hash_accept function in crypto/algif_hash.c in the Linux kernel allowed local users to cause a denial of service (OOPS) by attempting to trigger use of in-kernel hash algorithms for a socket that has received zero bytes of data (bnc#1010150). - CVE-2016-8633: drivers/firewire/net.c in the Linux kernel, in certain unusual hardware configurations, allowed remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted fragmented packets (bnc#1008833). The update package also includes non-security fixes. See advisory for details. Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the SUSE security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.
