Vulnerable Configurations
Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)
Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)
- Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
- Overflow Buffers Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
- Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
- Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
- MIME Conversion An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

NASL family SuSE Local Security Checks NASL id SUSE_SU-2019-2600-1.NASL description This update for the Linux Kernel 4.4.180-94_100 fixes several issues. The following security issues were fixed : CVE-2019-14835: A buffer overflow flaw was found in the way vhost functionality, that translates virtqueue buffers to IOVs, logged the buffer descriptors during migration. A privileged guest user able to pass descriptors with invalid length to the host when migration is underway, could use this flaw to increase their privileges on the host (bsc#1151021). CVE-2017-18379: Fixed an out of boundary access that happened in drivers/nvme/target/fc.c (bsc#1145604). Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the SUSE security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues. last seen 2020-06-01 modified 2020-06-02 plugin id 129746 published 2019-10-09 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2019 and is owned by Tenable, Inc. or an Affiliate thereof. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/129746 title SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2019:2600-1) NASL family SuSE Local Security Checks NASL id SUSE_SU-2019-2949-1.NASL description The SUSE Linux Enterprise 12-SP3 kernel was updated to receive various security and bugfixes. The following security bugs were fixed : CVE-2018-12207: Untrusted virtual machines on Intel CPUs could exploit a race condition in the Instruction Fetch Unit of the Intel CPU to cause a Machine Exception during Page Size Change, causing the CPU core to be non-functional. The Linux Kernel kvm hypervisor was adjusted to avoid page size changes in executable pages by splitting / merging huge pages into small pages as needed. CVE-2019-11135: Aborting an asynchronous TSX operation on Intel CPUs with Transactional Memory support could be used to facilitate sidechannel information leaks out of microarchitectural buffers, similar to the previously described last seen 2020-06-01 modified 2020-06-02 plugin id 130949 published 2019-11-13 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2019 and is owned by Tenable, Inc. or an Affiliate thereof. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/130949 title SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2019:2949-1)
