Vulnerabilities > CVE-2015-3145 - Improper Restriction of Operations within the Bounds of a Memory Buffer vulnerability in multiple products
Attack vector
UNKNOWN Attack complexity
UNKNOWN Privileges required
UNKNOWN Confidentiality impact
UNKNOWN Integrity impact
UNKNOWN Availability impact
UNKNOWN Summary
The sanitize_cookie_path function in cURL and libcurl 7.31.0 through 7.41.0 does not properly calculate an index, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write and crash) or possibly have other unspecified impact via a cookie path containing only a double-quote character.
Vulnerable Configurations
Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)
Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)
- Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
- Overflow Buffers Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
- Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
- Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
- MIME Conversion An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

When doing HTTP requests NTLM authenticated, the entire connection becomes authenticated and not just the specific HTTP request which is otherwise how HTTP works. This makes NTLM special and a subject for special treatment in the code. With NTLM, once the connection is authenticated, no further authentication is necessary until the connection gets closed. When doing HTTP requests Negotiate authenticated, the entire connection may become authenticated and not just the specific HTTP request which is otherwise how HTTP works, as Negotiate can basically use NTLM under the hood. curl was not adhering to this fact but would assume that such requests would also be authenticated per request. libcurl supports HTTP last seen 2020-06-01 modified 2020-06-02 plugin id 83842 published 2015-05-27 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2015-2018 and is owned by Tenable, Inc. or an Affiliate thereof. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/83842 title FreeBSD : cURL -- multiple vulnerabilities (6294f75f-03f2-11e5-aab1-d050996490d0) NASL family Slackware Local Security Checks NASL id SLACKWARE_SSA_2015-302-01.NASL description New curl packages are available for Slackware 13.0, 13.1, 13.37, 14.0, 14.1, and -current to fix security issues. last seen 2020-06-01 modified 2020-06-02 plugin id 86662 published 2015-10-30 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2015-2016 Tenable Network Security, Inc. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/86662 title Slackware 13.0 / 13.1 / 13.37 / 14.0 / 14.1 / current : curl (SSA:2015-302-01) NASL family MacOS X Local Security Checks NASL id MACOSX_10_10_5.NASL description The remote host is running a version of Mac OS X 10.10.x that is prior to 10.10.5.
