Vulnerabilities > CVE-2014-9630 - Improper Restriction of Operations within the Bounds of a Memory Buffer vulnerability in Videolan VLC Media Player
Attack vector
LOCAL Attack complexity
LOW Privileges required
NONE Confidentiality impact
HIGH Integrity impact
HIGH Availability impact
HIGH Summary
The rtp_packetize_xiph_config function in modules/stream_out/rtpfmt.c in VideoLAN VLC media player before 2.1.6 uses a stack-allocation approach with a size determined by arbitrary input data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted length value.
Vulnerable Configurations
Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)
Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)
- Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
- Overflow Buffers Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
- Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
- Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
- MIME Conversion An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

This could allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or arbitrary code execution via crafted MP4 files. - CVE-2014-9627 The MP4 demuxer, when parsing string boxes, did not properly check that the conversion of the box length from 64bit integer to 32bit integer on 32bit platforms did not cause a truncation, leading to a possible buffer overflow. This could allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or arbitrary code execution via crafted MP4 files. - CVE-2014-9628 The MP4 demuxer, when parsing string boxes, did not properly check the length of the box, leading to a possible buffer overflow. This could allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or arbitrary code execution via crafted MP4 files. - CVE-2014-9629 The Dirac and Schroedinger encoders did not properly check for an integer overflow on 32bit platforms, leading to a possible buffer overflow. This could allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or arbitrary code execution. last seen 2020-03-17 modified 2015-02-03 plugin id 81130 published 2015-02-03 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2015-2020 and is owned by Tenable, Inc. or an Affiliate thereof. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/81130 title Debian DSA-3150-1 : vlc - security update NASL family Gentoo Local Security Checks NASL id GENTOO_GLSA-201603-08.NASL description The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-201603-08 (VLC: Multiple vulnerabilities) Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in VLC.
