Vulnerable Configurations
Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)
Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)
- Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
- Overflow Buffers Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
- Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
- Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
- MIME Conversion An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

NASL family Huawei Local Security Checks NASL id EULEROS_SA-2018-1091.NASL description According to the versions of the zsh package installed, the EulerOS installation on the remote host is affected by the following vulnerabilities : - The zsh shell is a command interpreter usable as an interactive login shell and as a shell script command processor. Zsh resembles the ksh shell (the Korn shell), but includes many enhancements. Zsh supports command line editing, built-in spelling correction, programmable command completion, shell functions (with autoloading), a history mechanism, and more. - Security fix(es): - In builtin.c in zsh before 5.4, when sh compatibility mode is used, there is a NULL pointer dereference during processing of the cd command with no argument if HOME is not set.(CVE-2017-18205) - zsh before 5.0.7 allows evaluation of the initial values of integer variables imported from the environment (instead of treating them as literal numbers). That could allow local privilege escalation, under some specific and atypical conditions where zsh is being invoked in privilege-elevation contexts when the environment has not been properly sanitized, such as when zsh is invoked by sudo on systems where last seen 2020-05-06 modified 2018-05-02 plugin id 109489 published 2018-05-02 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2018-2020 and is owned by Tenable, Inc. or an Affiliate thereof. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/109489 title EulerOS 2.0 SP2 : zsh (EulerOS-SA-2018-1091) code # # (C) Tenable Network Security, Inc. # include("compat.inc"); if (description) { script_id(109489); script_version("1.7"); script_set_attribute(attribute:"plugin_modification_date", value:"2020/05/04"); script_cve_id( "CVE-2014-10070", "CVE-2014-10071", "CVE-2017-18205", "CVE-2017-18206", "CVE-2018-7549" ); script_name(english:"EulerOS 2.0 SP2 : zsh (EulerOS-SA-2018-1091)"); script_summary(english:"Checks the rpm output for the updated packages."); script_set_attribute(attribute:"synopsis", value: "The remote EulerOS host is missing multiple security updates."); script_set_attribute(attribute:"description", value: "According to the versions of the zsh package installed, the EulerOS installation on the remote host is affected by the following vulnerabilities : - The zsh shell is a command interpreter usable as an interactive login shell and as a shell script command processor. An attacker could use this flaw to cause a denial of service by crashing the user shell. (CVE-2014-10071) - A NULL pointer dereference flaw was found in the code responsible for the cd builtin command of the zsh package. An attacker could use this flaw to cause a denial of service by crashing the user shell. (CVE-2017-18205) - A buffer overflow flaw was found in the zsh shell check path functionality. A local, unprivileged user can create a specially crafted message file, which, if used to set a custom you have new mail message, leads to code execution in the context of the user who receives the message. If the user affected is privileged, this leads to privilege escalation. (CVE-2018-1100) - A buffer overflow flaw was found in the zsh shell auto- complete functionality. A local, unprivileged user can create a specially crafted directory path which leads to code execution in the context of the user who tries to use auto-complete to traverse the before mentioned path. If the user affected is privileged, this leads to privilege escalation. (CVE-2018-1083) - zsh through version 5.4.2 is vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow in the exec.c:hashcmd() function. A local attacker could exploit this to cause a denial of service. (CVE-2018-1071) - A NULL pointer dereference flaw was found in the code responsible for saving hashtables of the zsh package. An attacker could use this flaw to cause a denial of service by crashing the user shell. (CVE-2018-7549) - A buffer overflow flaw was found in the zsh shell symbolic link resolver. A local, unprivileged user can create a specially crafted directory path which leads to a buffer overflow in the context of the user trying to do a symbolic link resolution in the aforementioned path. NASL family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks NASL id ORACLELINUX_ELSA-2018-3073.NASL description From Red Hat Security Advisory 2018:3073 : An update for zsh is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having a security impact of Moderate. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available for each vulnerability from the CVE link(s) in the References section. The zsh shell is a command interpreter usable as an interactive login shell and as a shell script command processor. Zsh resembles the ksh shell (the Korn shell), but includes many enhancements. Zsh supports command-line editing, built-in spelling correction, programmable command completion, shell functions (with autoloading), a history mechanism, and more. Security Fix(es) : * zsh: Stack-based buffer overflow in gen_matches_files() at compctl.c (CVE-2018-1083) * zsh: buffer overflow for very long fds in >& fd syntax (CVE-2014-10071) * zsh: buffer overflow when scanning very long directory paths for symbolic links (CVE-2014-10072) * zsh: NULL dereference in cd in sh compatibility mode under given circumstances (CVE-2017-18205) * zsh: buffer overrun in symlinks (CVE-2017-18206) * zsh: Stack-based buffer overflow in exec.c:hashcmd() (CVE-2018-1071) * zsh: buffer overflow in utils.c:checkmailpath() can lead to local arbitrary code execution (CVE-2018-1100) * zsh: crash on copying empty hash table (CVE-2018-7549) For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.
