PARTIAL Summary

Vulnerable Configurations
Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)
Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)
- Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
- Overflow Buffers Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
- Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
- Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
- MIME Conversion An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

NASL family Mandriva Local Security Checks NASL id MANDRIVA_MDVSA-2011-149.NASL description Multiple vulnerabilities has been discovered and corrected in cyrus-imapd : Stack-based buffer overflow in the split_wildmats function in nntpd.c in nntpd in Cyrus IMAP Server before 2.3.17 and 2.4.x before 2.4.11 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted NNTP command (CVE-2011-3208). Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in Cyrus IMAPd, which can be exploited by malicious people to bypass certain security restrictions. The vulnerability is caused due to an error within the authentication mechanism of the NNTP server, which can be exploited to bypass the authentication process and execute commands intended for authenticated users by sending an AUTHINFO USER command without a following AUTHINFO PASS command (CVE-2011-3372). Packages for 2009.0 are provided as of the Extended Maintenance Program. Please visit this link to learn more: http://store.mandriva.com/product_info.php?cPath=149 products_id=490 The updated packages have been patched to correct these issues. last seen 2020-06-01 modified 2020-06-02 plugin id 56525 published 2011-10-17 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2011-2019 Tenable Network Security, Inc. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/56525 title Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : cyrus-imapd (MDVSA-2011:149) NASL family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks NASL id ORACLELINUX_ELSA-2011-1317.NASL description From Red Hat Security Advisory 2011:1317 : Updated cyrus-imapd packages that fix one security issue are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 5, and 6.
