Vulnerabilities > CVE-2009-4901 - Improper Restriction of Operations within the Bounds of a Memory Buffer vulnerability in Muscle Pcsc-Lite
Attack vector
UNKNOWN Attack complexity
UNKNOWN Privileges required
UNKNOWN Confidentiality impact
UNKNOWN Integrity impact
UNKNOWN Availability impact
UNKNOWN Summary
The MSGFunctionDemarshall function in winscard_svc.c in the PC/SC Smart Card daemon (aka PCSCD) in MUSCLE PCSC-Lite before 1.5.4 might allow local users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via crafted SCARD_SET_ATTRIB message data, which is improperly demarshalled and triggers a buffer over-read, a related issue to CVE-2010-0407.
Vulnerable Configurations
Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)
Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)
- Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
- Overflow Buffers Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
- Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
- Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
- MIME Conversion An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

NASL family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks NASL id ORACLELINUX_ELSA-2010-0533.NASL description From Red Hat Security Advisory 2010:0533 : Updated pcsc-lite packages that fix multiple security issues are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having moderate security impact. Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base scores, which give detailed severity ratings, are available for each vulnerability from the CVE links in the References section. PC/SC Lite provides a Windows SCard compatible interface for communicating with smart cards, smart card readers, and other security tokens. Multiple buffer overflow flaws were discovered in the way the pcscd daemon, a resource manager that coordinates communications with smart card readers and smart cards connected to the system, handled client requests. A local user could create a specially crafted request that would cause the pcscd daemon to crash or, possibly, execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2010-0407, CVE-2009-4901) Users of pcsc-lite should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain a backported patch to correct these issues.
