Regulated data makes up more than a third of the sensitive data being shared with GenAI applications-presenting a potential risk to businesses of costly data breaches, according to Netskope.

There are positive signs of proactive risk management in the nuance of security and data loss controls organizations are applying: for example, 65% of enterprises now implement real-time user coaching to help guide user interactions with GenAI apps.

The primary risk stems from the data users send to the apps, including data loss, unintentional sharing of confidential information, and inappropriate use of information from GenAI services.

Users are still the key actors in causing and preventing data risk and today, the most urgent security risks for GenAI users are all data-related.

Data loss prevention has increased in popularity from 24% in June 2023 to over 42% of organizations using DLP to control the types of data sent to GenAI apps in June 2024, more than 75% year-over-year growth.

The focus should be on data risk from GenAI app usage, as data is at the core of GenAI systems.
