Faculty and students at the University of Texas at Austin this week became the latest members of a public US university to lose access to Chinese video app TikTok via campus networks.

According to Neyland's email, the ban puts the university in compliance with a December directive issued by state governor Greg Abbott.

The University of North Texas has also blocked the app.

Texas Tech and the University of Houston are reportedly waiting for state guidance on the use of TikTok on personal devices before issuing any bans.

The University System of Georgia, the University of Oklahoma, and Auburn University in Alabama are among those reported to be restricting access.
