A new report from digital identity platform ForgeRock shows how and where data breaches are affecting US businesses and their customers.

With more than 5 billion records compromised in 2019, breaches cost US organizations more than $1.2 trillion.

Even prior to the coronavirus pandemic, healthcare was the most targeted sector last year with 382 data breaches leading to costs of more than $2.5 billion-that was a huge jump over the 164 incidents and $633 million in costs seen in 2018.

Breaches cost the tech industry more than $250 billion, as more than 1.37 billion records were exposed during the year.

Personally identifiable information remained the most targeted type of data sought by attackers and was compromised in 98% of the breaches recorded last year.
