Security News > 2020 > January > Google to Nix Chrome Support for Third-Party Cookies by 2022
Google has set an aggressive two-year deadline for dropping support for third-party tracking cookies in its Chrome web browser.
Justin Schuh, engineering director for Google Chrome, said in a post Tuesday that the phasing out of third-party cookies was in response to evolving attitudes about online privacy.
Privacy Sandbox is in development, as are several other technologies Google hopes to roll out over the next two years to keep advertisers happy during the sunset of tracking cookies.
"[Treating] cookies that don't include a SameSite label as first-party only, and requiring cookies labeled for third-party use to be accessed over HTTPS [we] will make third-party cookies more secure and give users more precise browser cookie controls," Schuh wrote.
Google also plans to go beyond removing support for third-party cookies.
