Summary

An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists when the Storage Service improperly handles file operations, aka 'Windows Storage Service Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability'.

Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)

Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)

  • Restful Privilege Elevation
Rest uses standard HTTP (Get, Put, Delete) style permissions methods, but these are not necessarily correlated generally with back end programs. Strict interpretation of HTTP get methods means that these HTTP Get services should not be used to delete information on the server, but there is no access control mechanism to back up this logic. This means that unless the services are properly ACL'd and the application's service implementation are following these guidelines then an HTTP request can easily execute a delete or update on the server side. The attacker identifies a HTTP Get URL such as http://victimsite/updateOrder, which calls out to a program to update orders on a database or other resource. The URL is not idempotent so the request can be submitted multiple times by the attacker, additionally, the attacker may be able to exploit the URL published as a Get method that actually performs updates (instead of merely retrieving data). This may result in malicious or inadvertent altering of data on the server.

descriptionThe remote Windows host is missing security update 4551853. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities : - A denial of service vulnerability exists when .NET Core or .NET Framework improperly handles web requests. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could cause a denial of service against a .NET Core or .NET Framework web application. The vulnerability can be exploited remotely, without authentication. A remote unauthenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability by issuing specially crafted requests to the .NET Core or .NET Framework application. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how the .NET Core or .NET Framework web application handles web requests. (CVE-2020-1108) - An information disclosure vulnerability exists in the way that the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) handles objects in memory, allowing an attacker to retrieve information from a targeted system. By itself, the information disclosure does not allow arbitrary code execution; however, it could allow arbitrary code to be run if the attacker uses it in combination with another vulnerability. (CVE-2020-1141) - An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in Windows Error Reporting (WER) when WER handles and executes files. The vulnerability could allow elevation of privilege if an attacker can successfully exploit it. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain greater access to sensitive information and system functionality. (CVE-2020-1021, CVE-2020-1082, CVE-2020-1088) - A remote code execution vulnerability exists when Microsoft Edge PDF Reader improperly handles objects in memory. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in such a way that enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. (CVE-2020-1096) - A denial of service vulnerability exists when Hyper-V on a Windows Server fails to properly handle specially crafted network packets. (CVE-2020-0909) - A cross-site-scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists when Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) does not properly sanitize user inputs. An un-authenticated attacker could exploit the vulnerability by sending a specially crafted request to an affected ADFS server. The attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could then perform cross-site scripting attacks on affected systems and run scripts in the security context of the current user. This security update addresses the vulnerability by ensuring that ADFS properly sanitizes user inputs. (CVE-2020-1055) - An information disclosure vulnerability exists when the Windows kernel improperly handles objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could obtain information to further compromise the users system. (CVE-2020-1072) - A denial of service vulnerability exists when Connected User Experiences and Telemetry Service improperly handles file operations. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could cause a system to stop responding. (CVE-2020-1123) - A Denial Of Service vulnerability exists when Connected User Experiences and Telemetry Service fails to validate certain function values. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could deny dependent security feature functionality. (CVE-2020-1084) - An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in the way that the Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) handles objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code in kernel mode. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. (CVE-2020-1142) - An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists when the Windows Print Spooler service improperly allows arbitrary writing to the file system. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code with elevated system privileges. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. (CVE-2020-1048, CVE-2020-1070) - A denial of service vulnerability exists when Windows improperly handles objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could cause a target system to stop responding. (CVE-2020-1076) - A remote code execution vulnerability exists when the Windows Jet Database Engine improperly handles objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could execute arbitrary code on a victim system. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by enticing a victim to open a specially crafted file. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting the way the Windows Jet Database Engine handles objects in memory. (CVE-2020-1051, CVE-2020-1174, CVE-2020-1175, CVE-2020-1176) - An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists when Windows improperly handles calls to Clipboard Service. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code in the security context of the local system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. (CVE-2020-1111, CVE-2020-1121) - An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists when the Windows fails to properly handle objects in memory.
