Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)

  • Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables
This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
  • Overflow Buffers
Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
  • Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow
This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
  • Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow
In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
  • MIME Conversion
An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

A privileged user inside guest could have used this to leak host memory bytes to a guest (boo#994761) - CVE-2016-6888: Integer overflow in packet initialisation in VMXNET3 device driver. A privileged user inside guest could have used this flaw to crash the Qemu instance resulting in DoS (bsc#994772) - CVE-2016-6833: Use-after-free issue in the VMWARE VMXNET3 NIC device support. A privileged user inside guest could have used this issue to crash the Qemu instance resulting in DoS (boo#994775) - CVE-2016-6835: Buffer overflow in the VMWARE VMXNET3 NIC device support, causing an OOB read access (bsc#994625) - CVE-2016-6834: A infinite loop during packet fragmentation in the VMWARE VMXNET3 NIC device support allowed privileged user inside guest to crash the Qemu instance resulting in DoS (bsc#994421) - CVE-2016-6258: The PV pagetable code in arch/x86/mm.c in Xen allowed local 32-bit PV guest OS administrators to gain host OS privileges by leveraging fast-paths for updating pagetable entries (bsc#988675) - CVE-2016-6259: Xen did not implement Supervisor Mode Access Prevention (SMAP) whitelisting in 32-bit exception and event delivery, which allowed local 32-bit PV guest OS kernels to cause a denial of service (hypervisor and VM crash) by triggering a safety check (bsc#988676) - CVE-2016-5403: The virtqueue_pop function in hw/virtio/virtio.c in QEMU allowed local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (memory consumption and QEMU process crash) by submitting requests without waiting for completion (boo#990923) -
