Summary

tcpdump 3.8 through 4.6.2 might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from memory or cause a denial of service (packet loss or segmentation fault) via a crafted Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) packet, which triggers an out-of-bounds memory access.

    In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
  • MIME Conversion
    An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

The application decoder for the Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocol in Tcpdump fails to perform input validation and performs unsafe out-of-bound accesses. The application will usually not crash, but perform out-of-bounds accesses and output/leak larger amounts of invalid data, which might lead to dropped packets. It is unknown if a payload exists that might trigger segfaults (CVE-2014-8769). It was discovered that tcpdump incorrectly handled printing PPP packets. A remote attacker could use this issue to cause tcpdump to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code (CVE-2014-9140).
