Vulnerabilities > CVE-2012-5958 - Improper Restriction of Operations Within the Bounds of A Memory Buffer vulnerability in Libupnp Project Libupnp
Summary
Stack-based buffer overflow in the unique_service_name function in ssdp/ssdp_server.c in the SSDP parser in the portable SDK for UPnP Devices (aka libupnp, formerly the Intel SDK for UPnP devices) before 1.6.18 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a UDP packet with a crafted string that is not properly handled after a certain pointer subtraction. Per CERT's advisory additional products may be affected: http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/922681 "Hundreds of vendors have used the libupnp library in their products, many of which are acting as the home routers for consumer networks. Any application linking to libupnp is likely to be affected"
Vulnerable Configurations
Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)
Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)
- Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
- Overflow Buffers Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
- Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
- Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
- MIME Conversion An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

description This module exploits a buffer overflow in the unique_service_name() function of libupnp's SSDP processor. The libupnp library is used across thousands of devices and is referred to as the Intel SDK for UPnP Devices or the Portable SDK for UPnP Devices. Due to size limitations on many devices, this exploit uses a separate TCP listener to stage the real payload. id MSF:EXPLOIT/MULTI/UPNP/LIBUPNP_SSDP_OVERFLOW last seen 2020-05-21 modified 2020-02-18 published 2013-02-03 references reporter Rapid7 source https://github.com/rapid7/metasploit-framework/blob/master//modules/exploits/multi/upnp/libupnp_ssdp_overflow.rb title Portable UPnP SDK unique_service_name() Remote Code Execution description Discover information from UPnP-enabled systems id MSF:AUXILIARY/SCANNER/UPNP/SSDP_MSEARCH last seen 2019-12-17 modified 2017-07-24 published 2010-11-09 references reporter Rapid7 source https://github.com/rapid7/metasploit-framework/blob/master//modules/auxiliary/scanner/upnp/ssdp_msearch.rb title UPnP SSDP M-SEARCH Information Discovery

HD Moore from Rapid7 discovered that SSDP queries where not correctly handled by the unique_service_name() function. An attacker sending carefully crafted SSDP queries to a daemon built on libupnp4 could generate a buffer overflow, overwriting the stack, leading to the daemon crash and possible remote code execution. last seen 2020-03-17 modified 2013-02-04 plugin id 64396 published 2013-02-04 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2013-2020 and is owned by Tenable, Inc. or an Affiliate thereof. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/64396 title Debian DSA-2615-1 : libupnp4 - several vulnerabilities NASL family Gain a shell remotely NASL id LIBUPNP_1_6_18.NASL description According to its banner, the version of Portable SDK for UPnP Devices (libupnp) running on the remote host is prior to 1.6.18.
