Vulnerable Configurations
Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)
Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)
- Leverage Executable Code in Non-Executable Files An attack of this type exploits a system's trust in configuration and resource files, when the executable loads the resource (such as an image file or configuration file) the attacker has modified the file to either execute malicious code directly or manipulate the target process (e.g. application server) to execute based on the malicious configuration parameters. Since systems are increasingly interrelated mashing up resources from local and remote sources the possibility of this attack occurring is high. The attack can be directed at a client system, such as causing buffer overrun through loading seemingly benign image files, as in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-028 where specially crafted JPEG files could cause a buffer overrun once loaded into the browser. Another example targets clients reading pdf files. In this case the attacker simply appends javascript to the end of a legitimate url for a pdf (http://www.gnucitizen.org/blog/danger-danger-danger/) http://path/to/pdf/file.pdf#whatever_name_you_want=javascript:your_code_here The client assumes that they are reading a pdf, but the attacker has modified the resource and loaded executable javascript into the client's browser process. The attack can also target server processes. The attacker edits the resource or configuration file, for example a web.xml file used to configure security permissions for a J2EE app server, adding role name "public" grants all users with the public role the ability to use the administration functionality. The server trusts its configuration file to be correct, but when they are manipulated, the attacker gains full control.
- Manipulating User-Controlled Variables This attack targets user controlled variables (DEBUG=1, PHP Globals, and So Forth). An attacker can override environment variables leveraging user-supplied, untrusted query variables directly used on the application server without any data sanitization. In extreme cases, the attacker can change variables controlling the business logic of the application. For instance, in languages like PHP, a number of poorly set default configurations may allow the user to override variables.

Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.23 and 4.x through 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors (CVE-2011-2995). Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors (CVE-2011-2997). Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.23 and 4.x through 5, Thunderbird before 6.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.3 do not properly handle location as the name of a frame, which allows remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy via a crafted website, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-0170 (CVE-2011-2999). Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.23 and 4.x through 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 do not properly handle HTTP responses that contain multiple Location, Content-Length, or Content-Disposition headers, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct HTTP response splitting attacks via crafted header values (CVE-2011-3000). Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 do not prevent manual add-on installation in response to the holding of the Enter key, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via a crafted web site that triggers an unspecified internal error (CVE-2011-3001). Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine (ANGLE), as used in Mozilla Firefox before 7.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.4, does not validate the return value of a GrowAtomTable function call, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors that trigger a memory-allocation error and a resulting buffer overflow (CVE-2011-3002). Mozilla Firefox before 7.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via an unspecified WebGL test case that triggers a memory-allocation error and a resulting out-of-bounds write operation (CVE-2011-3003). The JSSubScriptLoader in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 6 and SeaMonkey before 2.4 does not properly handle XPCNativeWrappers during calls to the loadSubScript method in an add-on, which makes it easier for remote attackers to gain privileges via a crafted website that leverages certain unwrapping behavior (CVE-2011-3004). Use-after-free vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted OGG headers in a .ogg file (CVE-2011-3005). YARR, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 7.0, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted JavaScript (CVE-2011-3232). MFSA 2011-36: Mozilla developers identified and fixed several memory safety bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. In general these flaws cannot be exploited through email in the Thunderbird and SeaMonkey products because scripting is disabled, but are potentially a risk in browser or browser-like contexts in those products. YARR, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 7.0, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted JavaScript (CVE-2011-3232). last seen 2020-06-01 modified 2020-06-02 plugin id 61930 published 2012-09-06 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2012-2019 Tenable Network Security, Inc. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/61930 title Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : mozilla-thunderbird (MDVSA-2011:142) NASL family Windows NASL id MOZILLA_THUNDERBIRD_70.NASL description The installed version of Thunderbird is earlier than 7.0 and thus, is potentially affected by the following security issues : - If an attacker could trick a user into holding down the last seen 2020-06-01 modified 2020-06-02 plugin id 56336 published 2011-09-29 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2011-2018 Tenable Network Security, Inc. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/56336 title Mozilla Thunderbird < 7.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities NASL family Gentoo Local Security Checks NASL id GENTOO_GLSA-201301-01.NASL description The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-201301-01 (Mozilla Products: Multiple vulnerabilities) Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, NSS, GNU IceCat, and XULRunner. Please review the CVE identifiers referenced below for details. Impact : A remote attacker could entice a user to view a specially crafted web page or email, possibly resulting in execution of arbitrary code or a Denial of Service condition. Furthermore, a remote attacker may be able to perform Man-in-the-Middle attacks, obtain sensitive information, bypass restrictions and protection mechanisms, force file downloads, conduct XML injection attacks, conduct XSS attacks, bypass the Same Origin Policy, spoof URL’s for phishing attacks, trigger a vertical scroll, spoof the location bar, spoof an SSL indicator, modify the browser’s font, conduct clickjacking attacks, or have other unspecified impact. A local attacker could gain escalated privileges, obtain sensitive information, or replace an arbitrary downloaded file. Workaround : There is no known workaround at this time. last seen 2020-06-01 modified 2020-06-02 plugin id 63402 published 2013-01-08 reporter This script is Copyright (C) 2013-2020 and is owned by Tenable, Inc. or an Affiliate thereof. source https://www.tenable.com/plugins/nessus/63402 title GLSA-201301-01 : Mozilla Products: Multiple vulnerabilities (BEAST) NASL family SuSE Local Security Checks NASL id SUSE_11_4_MOZILLAFIREFOX-110928.NASL description Mozilla Firefox was updated to version 7. dbg114-MozillaFirefox-5208 MozillaFirefox-5208 new_updateinfo Improve Responsiveness with Memory Reductions dbg114-MozillaFirefox-5208 MozillaFirefox-5208 new_updateinfo Instant Sync dbg114-MozillaFirefox-5208 MozillaFirefox-5208 new_updateinfo WebSocket protocol 8 MFSA 2011-36: Mozilla developers identified and fixed several memory safety bugs in the browser engine used in Firefox and other Mozilla-based products.
