Summary

The JSSubScriptLoader in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 6 and SeaMonkey before 2.4 does not properly handle XPCNativeWrappers during calls to the loadSubScript method in an add-on, which makes it easier for remote attackers to gain privileges via a crafted web site that leverages certain unwrapping behavior.

Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE)

Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)

• Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables
This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
• Server Side Include (SSI) Injection
An attacker can use Server Side Include (SSI) Injection to send code to a web application that then gets executed by the web server. Doing so enables the attacker to achieve similar results to Cross Site Scripting, viz., arbitrary code execution and information disclosure, albeit on a more limited scale, since the SSI directives are nowhere near as powerful as a full-fledged scripting language. Nonetheless, the attacker can conveniently gain access to sensitive files, such as password files, and execute shell commands.
• Cross Zone Scripting
An attacker is able to cause a victim to load content into their web-browser that bypasses security zone controls and gain access to increased privileges to execute scripting code or other web objects such as unsigned ActiveX controls or applets. This is a privilege elevation attack targeted at zone-based web-browser security. In a zone-based model, pages belong to one of a set of zones corresponding to the level of privilege assigned to that page. Pages in an untrusted zone would have a lesser level of access to the system and/or be restricted in the types of executable content it was allowed to invoke. In a cross-zone scripting attack, a page that should be assigned to a less privileged zone is granted the privileges of a more trusted zone. This can be accomplished by exploiting bugs in the browser, exploiting incorrect configuration in the zone controls, through a cross-site scripting attack that causes the attackers' content to be treated as coming from a more trusted page, or by leveraging some piece of system functionality that is accessible from both the trusted and less trusted zone. This attack differs from "Restful Privilege Escalation" in that the latter correlates to the inadequate securing of RESTful access methods (such as HTTP DELETE) on the server, while cross-zone scripting attacks the concept of security zones as implemented by a browser.
• Cross Site Scripting through Log Files
An attacker may leverage a system weakness where logs are susceptible to log injection to insert scripts into the system's logs. If these logs are later viewed by an administrator through a thin administrative interface and the log data is not properly HTML encoded before being written to the page, the attackers' scripts stored in the log will be executed in the administrative interface with potentially serious consequences. This attack pattern is really a combination of two other attack patterns: log injection and stored cross site scripting.
• Command Line Execution through SQL Injection
An attacker uses standard SQL injection methods to inject data into the command line for execution. This could be done directly through misuse of directives such as MSSQL_xp_cmdshell or indirectly through injection of data into the database that would be interpreted as shell commands. Sometime later, an unscrupulous backend application (or could be part of the functionality of the same application) fetches the injected data stored in the database and uses this data as command line arguments without performing proper validation. The malicious data escapes that data plane by spawning new commands to be executed on the host.

descriptionIt was discovered that CVE-2011-3004, which addressed possible privilege escalation in addons, also affected Firefox 3.6. An attacker could potentially exploit Firefox when an add-on was installed that used loadSubscript in vulnerable ways. (CVE-2011-3647) Yosuke Hasegawa discovered that the Mozilla browser engine mishandled invalid sequences in the Shift-JIS encoding. A malicious website could possibly use this flaw this to steal data or inject malicious scripts into web content. (CVE-2011-3648) Marc Schoenefeld discovered that using Firebug to profile a JavaScript file with many functions would cause Firefox to crash. An attacker might be able to exploit this without using the debugging APIs which would potentially allow an attacker to remotely crash the browser. (CVE-2011-3650). Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

22 weak 512-bit certificates issued by the DigiCert Sdn. Bhd
certificate authority has been revoked from the root CA storage. This
was fixed with rootcerts-20111103.00 and nss-3.13. DigiCert Sdn. Bhd
is a Malaysian subordinate CA under Entrust and Verizon (GTE
CyberTrust). It bears no affiliation whatsoever with the US-based
corporation DigiCert, Inc., which is a member of Mozilla's root
program.

Untrusted search path vulnerability in Mozilla Network Security
Services (NSS) might allow local users to gain privileges via a Trojan
horse pkcs11.txt file in a top-level directory (CVE-2011-3640).

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox before
3.6.24 and 4.x through 7.0 and Thunderbird before 3.1.6 and 5.0
through 7.0 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or
HTML via crafted text with Shift JIS encoding (CVE-2011-3648).

Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.24 and 4.x through 7.0 and Thunderbird
before 3.1.6 and 5.0 through 7.0 do not properly handle JavaScript
files that contain many functions, which allows user-assisted remote
attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and
application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a
crafted file that is accessed by debugging APIs, as demonstrated by
Firebug (CVE-2011-3650).

The following vulnerabilities affetst Mandriva Linux 2011 only :

Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla
Firefox 7.0 and Thunderbird 7.0 allow remote attackers to cause a
denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or
possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors (CVE-2011-3651).

The browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 8.0 and Thunderbird
before 8.0 does not properly allocate memory, which allows remote
attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and
application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified
vectors (CVE-2011-3652).

The browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 8.0 and Thunderbird
before 8.0 does not properly handle links from SVG mpath elements to
non-SVG elements, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of
service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute
arbitrary code via unspecified vectors (CVE-2011-3654).

Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 7.0 and Thunderbird 5.0 through 7.0
perform access control without checking for use of the NoWaiverWrapper
wrapper, which allows remote attackers to gain privileges via a
crafted web site (CVE-2011-3655).

The following vulnerabilities affects Mandriva Enterpriser Server 5.2
and Mandriva Linux 2010.2 only :

The JSSubScriptLoader in Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.24 and Thunderbird
before 3.1.6 does not properly handle XPCNativeWrappers during calls
to the loadSubScript method in an add-on, which makes it easier for
remote attackers to gain privileges via a crafted web site that
leverages certain unwrapping behavior, a related issue to
CVE-2011-3004 (CVE-2011-3647).

Additionally, some packages which require so, have been rebuilt and
are being provided as updates."

descriptionThe remote Solaris system is missing necessary patches to address security updates : - Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.23 and 4.x through 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 do not prevent the starting of a download in response to the holding of the Enter key, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via a crafted web site. (CVE-2011-2372) - Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.23 and 4.x through 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors. (CVE-2011-2995) - Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors. (CVE-2011-2997) - Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.23 and 4.x through 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 do not properly handle HTTP responses that contain multiple Location, Content-Length, or Content-Disposition headers, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct HTTP response splitting attacks via crafted header values. (CVE-2011-3000) - Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 do not prevent manual add-on installation in response to the holding of the Enter key, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via a crafted web site that triggers an unspecified internal error. (CVE-2011-3001) - Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine (ANGLE), as used in Mozilla Firefox before 7.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.4, does not validate the return value of a GrowAtomTable function call, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors that trigger a memory-allocation error and a resulting buffer overflow. (CVE-2011-3002) - Mozilla Firefox before 7.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via an unspecified WebGL test case that triggers a memory-allocation error and a resulting out-of-bounds write operation. (CVE-2011-3003) - The JSSubScriptLoader in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 6 and SeaMonkey before 2.4 does not properly handle XPCNativeWrappers during calls to the loadSubScript method in an add-on, which makes it easier for remote attackers to gain privileges via a crafted web site that leverages certain unwrapping behavior. (CVE-2011-3004) - Use-after-free vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 6, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted OGG headers in a .ogg file. (CVE-2011-3005) - YARR, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 7.0, Thunderbird before 7.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted JavaScript. (CVE-2011-3232) - Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.24 and 4.x through 7.0 and Thunderbird before 3.1.6 and 5.0 through 7.0 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via crafted text with Shift JIS encoding. (CVE-2011-3648) - Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.24 and 4.x through 7.0 and Thunderbird before 3.1.6 and 5.0 through 7.0 do not properly handle JavaScript files that contain many functions, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted file that is accessed by debugging APIs, as demonstrated by Firebug. (CVE-2011-3650) - Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox 7.0 and Thunderbird 7.0 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors. (CVE-2011-3651) - The browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 8.0 and Thunderbird before 8.0 does not properly allocate memory, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors. (CVE-2011-3652) - The browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 8.0 and Thunderbird before 8.0 does not properly handle links from SVG mpath elements to non-SVG elements, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors. (CVE-2011-3654) - Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 7.0 and Thunderbird 5.0 through 7.0 perform access control without checking for use of the NoWaiverWrapper wrapper, which allows remote attackers to gain privileges via a crafted web site. In general these flaws cannot be exploited through email in the
Thunderbird and SeaMonkey products because scripting is disabled, but
are potentially a risk in browser or browser-like contexts in those
products.

Benjamin Smedberg, Bob Clary, and Jesse Ruderman reported memory
safety problems that affected Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 6.
(CVE-2011-2995)

Bob Clary, Andrew McCreight, Andreas Gal, Gary Kwong, Igor Bukanov,
Jason Orendorff, Jesse Ruderman, and Marcia Knous reported memory
safety problems that affected Firefox 6, fixed in Firefox 7.
(CVE-2011-2997)

MFSA 2011-38: Mozilla developer Boris Zbarsky reported that a frame
named 'location' could shadow the window.location object unless a
script in a page grabbed a reference to the true object before the
frame was created. Because some plugins use the value of
window.location to determine the page origin this could fool the
plugin into granting the plugin content access to another site or the
local file system in violation of the Same Origin Policy. This flaw
allows circumvention of the fix added for MFSA 2010-10.
(CVE-2011-2999)

MFSA 2011-39: Ian Graham of Citrix Online reported that when multiple
Location headers were present in a redirect response Mozilla behavior
differed from other browsers: Mozilla would use the second Location
header while Chrome and Internet Explorer would use the first. Two
copies of this header with different values could be a symptom of a
CRLF injection attack against a vulnerable server. Most commonly it is
the Location header itself that is vulnerable to the response
splitting and therefore the copy preferred by Mozilla is more likely
to be the malicious one. It is possible, however, that the first copy
was the injected one depending on the nature of the server
vulnerability.

The Mozilla browser engine has been changed to treat two copies of
this header with different values as an error condition. The same has
been done with the headers Content-Length and Content-Disposition.
(CVE-2011-3000)

MFSA 2011-40: Mariusz Mlynski reported that if you could convince a
user to hold down the Enter key--as part of a game or test, perhaps--a
malicious page could pop up a download dialog where the held key would
then activate the default Open action. For some file types this would
be merely annoying (the equivalent of a pop-up) but other file types
have powerful scripting capabilities. And this would provide an avenue
for an attacker to exploit a vulnerability in applications not
normally exposed to potentially hostile internet content.

Mariusz also reported a similar flaw with manual plugin installation
using the PLUGINSPAGE attribute. It was possible to create an internal
error that suppressed a confirmation dialog, such that holding enter
would lead to the installation of an arbitrary add-on. (This variant
did not affect Firefox 3.6)

Holding enter allows arbitrary code execution due to Download Manager
(CVE-2011-2372)

Holding enter allows arbitrary extension installation (CVE-2011-3001)

MFSA 2011-41: Michael Jordon of Context IS reported that in the ANGLE
library used by WebGL the return value from GrowAtomTable() was not
checked for errors. If an attacker could cause requests that exceeded
the available memeory those would fail and potentially lead to a
buffer overrun as subsequent code wrote into the non-allocated space.
(CVE-2011-3002)

Ben Hawkes of the Google Security Team reported a WebGL test case that
demonstrated an out of bounds write after an allocation failed.
(CVE-2011-3003)

MFSA 2011-42: Security researcher Aki Helin reported a potentially
exploitable crash in the YARR regular expression library used by
JavaScript. (CVE-2011-3232)

MFSA 2011-43: David Rees reported that the JSSubScriptLoader (a
feature used by some add-ons) was 'unwrapping' XPCNativeWrappers when
they were used as the scope parameter to loadSubScript(). Without the
protection of the wrappers the add-on could be vulnerable to privilege
escalation attacks from malicious web content. Whether any given
add-on were vulnerable would depend on how the add-on used the feature
and whether it interacted directly with web content, but we did find
at least one vulnerable add-on and presumer there are more.
(CVE-2011-3004)

The unwrapping behavior was a change introduced during Firefox 4
development. Firefox 3.6 and earlier versions are not affected.

MFSA 2011-44: sczimmer reported that Firefox crashed when loading a
particular .ogg file. This was due to a use-after-free condition and
could potentially be exploited to install malware. (CVE-2011-3005)

This vulnerability does not affect Firefox 3.6 or earlier.

MFSA 2011-45: University of California, Davis researchers Liang Cai
and Hao Chen presented a paper at the 2011 USENIX HotSec workshop on
inferring keystrokes from device motion data on mobile devices. Web
pages can now receive data similar to the apps studied in that paper
and likely present a similar risk. We have decided to limit motion
data events to the currently-active tab to prevent the possibility of
background tabs attempting to decipher keystrokes the user is entering
into the foreground tab."

"Benjamin Smedberg, Bob Clary, Jesse Ruderman, Bob Clary, Andrew
McCreight, Andreas Gal, Gary Kwong, Igor Bukanov, Jason Orendorff,
Jesse Ruderman, and Marcia Knous discovered multiple memory
vulnerabilities in the browser rendering engine. An attacker could use
these to possibly execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the
user invoking Firefox. (CVE-2011-2995, CVE-2011-2997)

Boris Zbarsky discovered that a frame named 'location' could shadow
the window.location object unless a script in a page grabbed a
reference to the true object before the frame was created. This is in
violation of the Same Origin Policy. A malicious website could
possibly use this to access another website or the local file system.
(CVE-2011-2999)

Ian Graham discovered that when multiple Location headers were
present, Firefox would use the second one resulting in a possible CRLF
injection attack. CRLF injection issues can result in a wide variety
of attacks, such as XSS (Cross-Site Scripting) vulnerabilities,
browser cache poisoning, and cookie theft. (CVE-2011-3000)

Mariusz Mlynski discovered that if the user could be convinced to hold
down the enter key, a malicious website could potential pop up a
download dialog and the default open action would be selected or lead
to the installation of an arbitrary add-on. This would result in
potentially malicious content being run with privileges of the user
invoking Firefox. (CVE-2011-2372, CVE-2011-3001)

Michael Jordon and Ben Hawkes discovered flaws in WebGL. If a user
were tricked into opening a malicious page, an attacker could cause
the browser to crash. (CVE-2011-3002, CVE-2011-3003)

It was discovered that Firefox did not properly free memory when
processing ogg files. If a user were tricked into opening a malicious
page, an attacker could cause the browser to crash. (CVE-2011-3005)

David Rees and Aki Helin discovered a problems in the JavaScript
engine. An attacker could exploit this to crash the browser or
potentially escalate privileges within the browser. (CVE-2011-3232).

descriptionThe remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-201301-01 (Mozilla Products: Multiple vulnerabilities) Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, NSS, GNU IceCat, and XULRunner. Please review the CVE identifiers referenced below for details. Impact : A remote attacker could entice a user to view a specially crafted web page or email, possibly resulting in execution of arbitrary code or a Denial of Service condition. Furthermore, a remote attacker may be able to perform Man-in-the-Middle attacks, obtain sensitive information, bypass restrictions and protection mechanisms, force file downloads, conduct XML injection attacks, conduct XSS attacks, bypass the Same Origin Policy, spoof URL’s for phishing attacks, trigger a vertical scroll, spoof the location bar, spoof an SSL indicator, modify the browser’s font, conduct clickjacking attacks, or have other unspecified impact. A local attacker could gain escalated privileges, obtain sensitive information, or replace an arbitrary downloaded file. Workaround : There is no known workaround at this time.

"The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-201301-01
(Mozilla Products: Multiple vulnerabilities)

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Mozilla Firefox,
Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, NSS, GNU IceCat, and XULRunner. Please review the
CVE identifiers referenced below for details.

Impact :

A remote attacker could entice a user to view a specially crafted web
page or email, possibly resulting in execution of arbitrary code or a
Denial of Service condition. Furthermore, a remote attacker may be able
to perform Man-in-the-Middle attacks, obtain sensitive information,
bypass restrictions and protection mechanisms, force file downloads,
conduct XML injection attacks, conduct XSS attacks, bypass the Same
Origin Policy, spoof URL’s for phishing attacks, trigger a vertical
scroll, spoof the location bar, spoof an SSL indicator, modify the
browser’s font, conduct clickjacking attacks, or have other unspecified
impact.
A local attacker could gain escalated privileges, obtain sensitive
information, or replace an arbitrary downloaded file.

Workaround :

There is no known workaround at this time."

MFSA 2011-36: Mozilla developers identified and fixed several memory

Mozilla-based products. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory
corruption under certain circumstances, and we presume that with
enough effort at least some of these could be exploited to run
arbitrary code.

In general these flaws cannot be exploited through email in the
Thunderbird and SeaMonkey products because scripting is disabled,, but
are potentially a risk in browser or browser-like contexts in those

MFSA 2011-44: sczimmer reported that Firefox crashed when loading a
particular .ogg file. This was due to a use-after-free condition and
could potentially be exploited to install malware. (CVE-2011-3005)
