Summary

Integer overflow in libsndfile before 1.0.25 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted PARIS Audio Format (PAF) file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)

  • Buffer Overflow via Environment Variables
This attack pattern involves causing a buffer overflow through manipulation of environment variables. Once the attacker finds that they can modify an environment variable, they may try to overflow associated buffers. This attack leverages implicit trust often placed in environment variables.
  • Overflow Buffers
Buffer Overflow attacks target improper or missing bounds checking on buffer operations, typically triggered by input injected by an attacker. As a consequence, an attacker is able to write past the boundaries of allocated buffer regions in memory, causing a program crash or potentially redirection of execution as per the attackers' choice.
  • Client-side Injection-induced Buffer Overflow
This type of attack exploits a buffer overflow vulnerability in targeted client software through injection of malicious content from a custom-built hostile service.
  • Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow
In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
  • MIME Conversion
An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.

An attacker could exploit this to cause a denial of service via application crash, or possibly execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user invoking the program. Note that Tenable Network Security has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory. Tenable has attempted to automatically clean and format it as much as possible without introducing additional issues.

    NASL idREDHAT-RHSA-2011-1084.NASL
descriptionUpdated libsndfile packages that fix one security issue are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having moderate security impact. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available from the CVE link in the References section. The libsndfile packages provide a library for reading and writing sound files. An integer overflow flaw, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow, was found in the way the libsndfile library processed certain Ensoniq PARIS Audio Format (PAF) audio files. An attacker could create a specially crafted PAF file that, when opened, could cause an application using libsndfile to crash or, potentially, execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the application. (CVE-2011-2696) Users of libsndfile are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which contain a backported patch to correct this issue. All running applications using libsndfile must be restarted for the update to take effect.

    NASL idORACLELINUX_ELSA-2011-1084.NASL
descriptionFrom Red Hat Security Advisory 2011:1084 : Updated libsndfile packages that fix one security issue are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. All running applications using libsndfile must be restarted for the update to take effect.

descriptionThe remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-201312-14 (libsndfile: Arbitrary code execution) An integer overflow flaw has been discovered in Libsndfile. Impact : A remote attacker could entice a user to open a specially crafted PAF file using libsndfile, possibly resulting in execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the process, or a Denial of Service condition. Workaround : There is no known workaround at this time.
