Summary

Buffer overflow in x87 before 3.5.5 in ABB Process Communication Unit 400 (PCU400) 4.4 through 4.6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted packet using the (1) IEC60870-5-101 or (2) IEC60870-5-104 communication protocol to the X87 web interface. This issue is corrected in version 3.5.5 of the x87 executable. To obtain a patch or upgrade software please contact your vendor. The x87 executable is considered obsolete in newer versions of the PCU 400 and should be replaced by the newer x88 or x89 executable where applicable.   • Filter Failure through Buffer Overflow
    In this attack, the idea is to cause an active filter to fail by causing an oversized transaction. An attacker may try to feed overly long input strings to the program in an attempt to overwhelm the filter (by causing a buffer overflow) and hoping that the filter does not fail securely (i.e. the user input is let into the system unfiltered).
  • MIME Conversion
    An attacker exploits a weakness in the MIME conversion routine to cause a buffer overflow and gain control over the mail server machine. The MIME system is designed to allow various different information formats to be interpreted and sent via e-mail. Attack points exist when data are converted to MIME compatible format and back.
