Summary

Sun Java Web Start in JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 10 and earlier, and Java Web Start in SDK and JRE 1.4.2_13 and earlier, allows remote attackers to perform unauthorized actions via an application that grants privileges to itself, related to "Incorrect Use of System Classes" and probably related to support for JNLP files. The vendor has addressed this issue through product updates that can be found at: http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-102881-1

Common Attack Pattern Enumeration and Classification (CAPEC)

  • Accessing, Modifying or Executing Executable Files
An attack of this type exploits a system's configuration that allows an attacker to either directly access an executable file, for example through shell access; or in a possible worst case allows an attacker to upload a file and then execute it. Web servers, ftp servers, and message oriented middleware systems which have many integration points are particularly vulnerable, because both the programmers and the administrators must be in synch regarding the interfaces and the correct privileges for each interface.
  • Leverage Executable Code in Non-Executable Files
An attack of this type exploits a system's trust in configuration and resource files, when the executable loads the resource (such as an image file or configuration file) the attacker has modified the file to either execute malicious code directly or manipulate the target process (e.g. application server) to execute based on the malicious configuration parameters. Since systems are increasingly interrelated mashing up resources from local and remote sources the possibility of this attack occurring is high. The attack can be directed at a client system, such as causing buffer overrun through loading seemingly benign image files, as in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-028 where specially crafted JPEG files could cause a buffer overrun once loaded into the browser. Another example targets clients reading pdf files. In this case the attacker simply appends javascript to the end of a legitimate url for a pdf (http://www.gnucitizen.org/blog/danger-danger-danger/) http://path/to/pdf/file.pdf#whatever_name_you_want=javascript:your_code_here The client assumes that they are reading a pdf, but the attacker has modified the resource and loaded executable javascript into the client's browser process. The attack can also target server processes. The attacker edits the resource or configuration file, for example a web.xml file used to configure security permissions for a J2EE app server, adding role name "public" grants all users with the public role the ability to use the administration functionality. The server trusts its configuration file to be correct, but when they are manipulated, the attacker gains full control.
  • Blue Boxing
This type of attack against older telephone switches and trunks has been around for decades. A tone is sent by an adversary to impersonate a supervisor signal which has the effect of rerouting or usurping command of the line. While the US infrastructure proper may not contain widespread vulnerabilities to this type of attack, many companies are connected globally through call centers and business process outsourcing. These international systems may be operated in countries which have not upgraded Telco infrastructure and so are vulnerable to Blue boxing. Blue boxing is a result of failure on the part of the system to enforce strong authorization for administrative functions. While the infrastructure is different than standard current applications like web applications, there are historical lessons to be learned to upgrade the access control for administrative functions.
  • Restful Privilege Elevation
Rest uses standard HTTP (Get, Put, Delete) style permissions methods, but these are not necessarily correlated generally with back end programs. Strict interpretation of HTTP get methods means that these HTTP Get services should not be used to delete information on the server, but there is no access control mechanism to back up this logic. This means that unless the services are properly ACL'd and the application's service implementation are following these guidelines then an HTTP request can easily execute a delete or update on the server side. The attacker identifies a HTTP Get URL such as http://victimsite/updateOrder, which calls out to a program to update orders on a database or other resource. The URL is not idempotent so the request can be submitted multiple times by the attacker, additionally, the attacker may be able to exploit the URL published as a Get method that actually performs updates (instead of merely retrieving data). This may result in malicious or inadvertent altering of data on the server.
  • Target Programs with Elevated Privileges
This attack targets programs running with elevated privileges. The attacker would try to leverage a bug in the running program and get arbitrary code to execute with elevated privileges. For instance an attacker would look for programs that write to the system directories or registry keys (such as HKLM, which stores a number of critical Windows environment variables). These programs are typically running with elevated privileges and have usually not been designed with security in mind. Such programs are excellent exploit targets because they yield lots of power when they break. The malicious user try to execute its code at the same level as a privileged system call.

    Impact :

A remote attacker could entice a user to run a specially crafted applet
on a website or start an application in Java Web Start to execute
arbitrary code outside of the Java sandbox and of the Java security
restrictions with the privileges of the user running Java. The attacker
could also obtain sensitive information, create, modify, rename and
read local files, execute local applications, establish connections in
the local network, bypass the same origin policy, and cause a Denial of
        Service via multiple vectors.

    Workaround :

"Red Hat Network Satellite Server version 5.0.2 is now available. This
update includes fixes for a number of security issues in Red Hat
    Network Satellite Server components.

This update has been rated as having moderate security impact by the
    Red Hat Security Response Team.

During an internal security review, a cross-site scripting flaw was
found that affected the Red Hat Network channel search feature.
    (CVE-2007-5961)

This release also corrects several security vulnerabilities in various
components shipped as part of the Red Hat Network Satellite Server. In
a typical operating environment, these components are not exposed to
users of Satellite Server in a vulnerable manner. These security
updates will reduce risk in unique Satellite Server environments.

Multiple flaws were fixed in the Apache HTTPD server. These flaws
could result in a cross-site scripting, denial-of-service, or
    information disclosure attacks. (CVE-2004-0885, CVE-2006-5752,
    CVE-2006-7197, CVE-2007-1860, CVE-2007-3304, CVE-2007-4465,
    CVE-2007-5000, CVE-2007-6388)

    A denial-of-service flaw was fixed in mod_perl. (CVE-2007-1349)

A denial-of-service flaw was fixed in the jabberd server.
    (CVE-2006-1329)

Multiple cross-site scripting flaws were fixed in the image map
feature in the JFreeChart package. (CVE-2007-6306)

Multiple flaws were fixed in the IBM Java 1.4.2 Runtime.
    (CVE-2007-0243, CVE-2007-2435, CVE-2007-2788, CVE-2007-2789)

Two arbitrary code execution flaws were fixed in the OpenMotif
    package. (CVE-2005-3964, CVE-2005-0605)

A flaw which could result in weak encryption was fixed in the
    perl-Crypt-CBC package. (CVE-2006-0898)

Multiple flaws were fixed in the Tomcat package. (CVE-2008-0128,
    CVE-2007-5461, CVE-2007-3385, CVE-2007-3382, CVE-2007-1358,
    CVE-2007-1355, CVE-2007-2450, CVE-2007-2449, CVE-2007-0450,

Chris Evans of the Google Security Team has discovered an integer
overflow in the ICC parser, and another vulnerability in the BMP
parser. An unspecified vulnerability involving an 'incorrect use of
system classes' was reported by the Fujitsu security team.

    Impact :

A remote attacker could entice a user to open a specially crafted
image, possibly resulting in the execution of arbitrary code with the
privileges of the user running Emul-linux-x86-java. They also could
entice a user to open a specially crafted BMP image, resulting in a
Denial of Service. Note that these vulnerabilities may also be
triggered by a tool processing image files automatically.

    Workaround :

There is no known workaround at this time."

An unspecified vulnerability involving an 'incorrect use of system
classes' was reported by the Fujitsu security team. Additionally, Chris
Evans from the Google Security Team reported an integer overflow
resulting in a buffer overflow in the ICC parser used with JPG or BMP
files, and an incorrect open() call to /dev/tty when processing certain
        BMP files.

    Impact :

A remote attacker could entice a user to run a specially crafted Java
class or applet that will trigger one of the vulnerabilities. This
could lead to the execution of arbitrary code outside of the Java
sandbox and of the Java security restrictions, or crash the Java
        application or the browser.

IBM's 1.4.2 SR9 Java release includes the IBM Java 2 Runtime
Environment and the IBM Java 2 Software Development Kit.

A security vulnerability in the Java Web Start component was
discovered. An untrusted application could elevate it's privileges and
read and write local files that are accessible to the user running the
    Java Web Start application. (CVE-2007-2435)

A buffer overflow in the image code JRE was found. An untrusted applet
or application could use this flaw to elevate its privileges and
potentially execute arbitrary code as the user running the java
    virtual machine. (CVE-2007-3004)

An unspecified vulnerability was discovered in the Java Runtime
Environment. An untrusted applet or application could cause the java
virtual machine to become unresponsive. (CVE-2007-3005)

are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Extras and 5
    Supplementary.

This update has been rated as having critical security impact by the
    Red Hat Security Response Team.

IBM's 1.5.0 Java release includes the IBM Java 2 Runtime Environment
and the IBM Java 2 Software Development Kit.

A security vulnerability in the Java Web Start component was
discovered. An untrusted application could elevate it's privileges,
allowing it to read and write local files that are accessible to the
user running the Java Web Start application. (CVE-2007-2435)

A buffer overflow in the Java Runtime Environment image handling code
was found. An untrusted applet or application could use this flaw to
elevate its privileges and potentially execute arbitrary code as the
user running the java virtual machine. (CVE-2007-2788, CVE-2007-2789,
    CVE-2007-3004)

An unspecified vulnerability was discovered in the Java Runtime
Environment. An untrusted applet or application could cause the java
virtual machine to become unresponsive. (CVE-2007-3005)

The Javadoc tool was able to generate HTML documentation pages that
contained cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities. A remote
attacker could use this to inject arbitrary web script or HTML.
    (CVE-2007-3503)

The Java Web Start URL parsing component contains a buffer overflow
vulnerability within the parsing code for JNLP files. A remote
attacker could create a malicious JNLP file that could trigger this
flaw and execute arbitrary code when opened. (CVE-2007-3655)

A flaw was found in the applet class loader. An untrusted applet could
use this flaw to circumvent network access restrictions, possibly
connecting to services hosted on the machine that executed the applet.
    (CVE-2007-3922)

All users of java-ibm-1.5.0 should upgrade to these updated packages,
which contain IBM's 1.5.0 SR5a Java release that resolves these
    issues."
