In a new reconnaissance campaign, the Russian state-sponsored hacking group Turla was observed targeting the Austrian Economic Chamber, a NATO platform, and the Baltic Defense College. This discovery comes from cybersecurity firm Sekoia, which built upon previous findings of Google's TAG, which has been following Russian hackers closely this year.
A Tallinn man was arrested a week ago in Estonia under suspicion that he has exploited a government photo transfer service vulnerability to download ID scans of 286,438 Estonians from the Identity Documents Database. "During the searches, investigators found the downloaded photos from a database in the person's possession, along with the names and personal identification codes of the people," Oskar Gross, head of the police's cybercrime unit, said.
HID Global announced it has delivered a redesigned ePassport booklet and document issuance software to Estonia's Police and Border Guard Board. The U.S. Cyber Command operation occurred in Estonia from late September to early November, officials from both countries disclosed this week, just as the U.S. was working to safeguard its election systems from foreign interference and to keep coronavirus research from the prying reach of hackers in countries including Russia and China.

Estonian Ambassador Sven Jurgenson read a statement afterward, flanked by UK Ambassador Karen Pierce and acting U.S. deputy ambassador Cherith Norman Chalet, saying the cyber attacks "Are part of Russia's long-running campaign of hostile and destabilizing activity against Georgia and are part of a wider pattern of malign activity."
