Researchers analyzing the collateral consequences of a ransomware attack include costs that are roughly seven times higher than the ransom demanded by the threat actors. Ransomware attacks typically involve stealing data from the company and encrypting systems to pressure the victim into paying to decrypt files and to avoid a data leak.
Cloudflare on Wednesday disclosed that it acted to mitigate a 15.3 million request-per-second distributed denial-of-service attack. "HTTPS DDoS attacks are more expensive in terms of required computational resources because of the higher cost of establishing a secure TLS encrypted connection," Cloudflare's Omer Yoachimik and Julien Desgats said.

A previously unknown and financially motivated hacking group is impersonating a Russian agency in a phishing campaign targeting entities in Eastern European countries. The phishing emails pretend to come from the Russian Government's Federal Bailiffs Service and are written in the Russian language, with the recipients being telecommunication service providers and industrial firms in Lithuania, Estonia, and Russia.
Comcast Business published results from a report which provides an overview of the distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack landscape, trends experienced by its customers and insights for measuring and mitigating risks. The report indicates that 2021 was another record year for DDoS attacks, as Comcast Business DDoS Mitigation Services identified and helped defend 24,845 multi-vector attacks targeting Layers 3,4, and 7 simultaneously.
Ransomware attacks increased over 50% from February to March, and Hive was identified as the third-most active hacking group over the last month. Hive saw a 188% increase in the number of attacks from February, showing the most growth in rate of attacks during the last month as well.
